Veggie Tales - November 2017
Comments (115)I probably should try to score some UCGs myself to add to my last pile. I used to collect them at work but people didn't cooperate very well. I have a few gallons of chicken manure to toss in there and I can mow up some fairly green grass as well so that may be enough greens. I need to top off my other 2 piles as well since they have settled about a foot since last weekend. I still have 5 beds that I need to mulch and one of the new beds still needs about 4" more soil. We have a nice weekend ahead with highs in the 60s so I'd like to get it all done before the weather turns nasty next week. My indoor Muir lettuce is starting to get some size to them. Another couple weeks and I should be able to start harvesting. I started another 1/2 dozen last Sunday which gives me 18 total. The seed catalogs are starting to roll in. So far I have received Pinetree, Vermont Bean, and Totally Tomatoes. TT is the only one I have ever ordered from before. I like looking thru Johnny's the most....See MoreVeggie Tales - December 2017
Comments (96)Jack - that is the greatest chia pet ever. And I mean GREATEST! The best. Like none other... I've been absent from the boards for just about the whole month of December (too busy brewing – have done 40 gallons of beer and 15 gallons of wine so far!), but Sunday I went through all my seeds and put in my order at Johnny’s. Also sowed some lettuce, kale, and spinach for S&G…should have done that a long time ago but better now than never – maybe it’ll last long enough to transplant outside when it starts to warm up (we’ve been at or below zero wind chill just about every day since Christmas - I have a hunch we are going to have a long cold winter). Jack are you doing regular onions from seeds this year or just bunching? I think I remember you thinking that seeds weren’t worth it based on the last couple years results. I’ll be doing seeds if only to have something growing in January – Monastrell, Walla Walla, Sierra Blanca, and Moonshine from Johnny’s. I have to start planning my plant start donation/sale benefitting my moms MS Walk team. Last year was a hit even though it was poorly planned and spur of the moment. I did tomatoes and peppers only but had some people asking about cukes, zukes, and herbs so I might add those to the list. Problem is keeping the varieties o a reasonable number. I had 10 tomatoes and 7 or 8 peppers last year. Here’s my list so far (subject to change - let me know if there's anything glaring you see missing): Tomatoes – Big Beef, Amish Paste, Black Krim, Black Cherry, Big Boomer Cherry, Moskvich, Sun Gold, Giant Garden Paste, Cherokee Purple, Early Girl, Brandy Boy. Peppers – Jalepeno, Baron Poblano, Hungarian Wax, Lunchbox, Habanero, Ghost Chili, Doux D’espagne. 1 slicing Cuke, 1 pickling (variety TBD) Yellow squash, zucchini Basil, Oregano, Thyme, Parsley Might pull up some strawberry runners to sell. Probably will sell some of the onions starts too. I need to get my greenhouse built !!! That has to be a priority this year....See MoreVeggie Tales - October 2020
Comments (228)LOL Margi if you figure out what is brown and green let me know! Dahlias I have down as green because they are full of water and nitrogen. But maybe not if they get a chance to dry out and become mostly carbon. I think the most important thing is to keep changing what goes in as the pile grows. I just turned a pile that went cold after 6 weeks and it seemed mostly brown and dry so added layers of dahlias and other green stuff and some water as I rebuilt it and now it is heating up again. I don't have any deciduous trees so took lawn mower and trailer to a parking lot in town surrounded by oak trees. This must be their year to shed leaves because it was easy to mow up batches and came home with about a yard of mulch....See MoreNovember 2022 Veggie Tales
