Help with Get Well Gift

Hoping for help in figuring out a gift. My daughter’s future father-in-law had a medical emergency almost two weeks ago. He lost conciousness and fell onto a concrete floor, fracturing his skull. Since the fall he has been in and out of the hospital, thankfully he seems to be doing a bit better the last couple of days. We want to send him something that will cheer him up.

Just a couple of weeks before this injury he had heart surgery and we sent the usual floral/plant basket, so I am looking for a different idea. Ususlly I am pretty creative, but I am stumped this time. Hoping you all will have ideas for me.

For those of you who remember that my daughter is getting married, the wedding has been postponed by one month in hope that her future father-in-law can attend. We were so thankful that the wedding is at our home and on the smaller side. This made the change fairly easy.

Oh my gosh - I am so sorry! What a worry for everyone. I hope he continues to recover and that the wedding will be a joyous time for everyone.

Did he suffer a concussion at all?

A cozy blanket? An easy puzzle with large pieces?

Welcome to the forum! The first thing I would recommend, if you bought a commercial cactus soil, is to cut it in half with perlite. That will increase air circulation and decrease water retention, both of which are very important. You can get into more advanced soil mixes, but that's how I started out. Terra cotta pots are a great choice, just be careful with the saucers that they aren't holding on to too much water or your plants will rot. If they're going to be outside, I would recommend not even using them. It's hard to tell the exact size of your plants, but your pots sound a little large. Just be sure the plants are snug in their pots with not too much extra space. For the plants without roots (1 & 2, maybe 3, 4) you'll want to start differently than with the others. You can either leave the cuttings out of soil for now until they develop roots, or just barely bury them. Do not water until you see the plant growing, which means roots have formed, or the plants may rot. Also, shelter these ones a bit from the sun since they are prone to burning. For the plant(s) with roots, plant them as deeply as you would any other plant. You can water these ones right away. Water all of your succulents very sparingly until you figure out how much they can take. I water about every 3 weeks. Be sure your plants get lots of sun -- if they start to grow tall with lots of space between the leaves, they are not getting enough. Hope this helps and let me know if you have other questions!

@ Garden Graphic Gal-- Thank you for the link, that's what I was looking for. My neighbor is "not" a gardener, she says she can't grow dirt but she does love having tea with me in the middle of my garden and she has helped me pull weeds before. She purchased the rose for me because she wanted to do something nice, knows I love my gardening and said I didn't have any roses. One question that has now come up is that if it has been sitting in the original package for 3 weeks with nothing done to it, will it still grow? I didn't mean for it to happen, but I have been out of town for 2 weeks taking care of legal business and the death of my best friend in another part of the state and the bare root rose is still on the shelf in the garage. Will it still work if I soak it and get it in the ground this week? Dora @bagsmom - I am not opposed to using Bayer all in one if it works well. Right now, I need effective and simple. Thanks for the tip :)

ask the family member^^ to get some ideas of what she enjoys! i love body butter lotion with a light, fresh smell! but its not for everyone. i would get something specifically for her to enjoy or make her life easier in some way. agree with others about the flower idea. i love flowers/succulents - my sister, wants NOTHING to do with any of it. amazon card visa card if she is a tea or coffee drinker: go that route. cast iron tea pot, if she is a tea drinker a set of all occasion cards, so she doesn't have to go to store IOU from you to take care of baby so she go get a hair cut etc... IOU from you to just fold laundry or so she can get a shower in peace - of course if your relationship warrants these^^

Gosh, so sorry to hear of his setbacks and the delay of your daughter's wedding-- but yes, so great that your plans could be easily adjusted.

Get well gifts are really so varied-- is there a special treat your DD's FIL loves? My dad loved ice cream and Rita's Italian Ice. I also received a selection of Rita's this week after I had oral surgery. It's surely not fancy lol.. but I really appreciated it!

Or maybe a decorated pumpkin and something seasonal? a pumpkin bread or pumpkin roll? Of course, he may have dietary limitations... but surely fresh apples would be ok? Apple cider?

Does he have any brain swelling? if not-- perhaps some magazines and puzzle books? Or a table-top puzzle?

How well do you know him? If you’ve only met him a couple times, I’d send a card.

If you are good friends send a book that may interest him.

I bought this for my college son when he was sidelinec with injury, everybody enjoyed

Nerf Elite Target, with Nerf blaster of course. it is very stress reducing. A nerf dartboard we had in office was my inspo, of course in office bullseye is replaced with photo of petson causing stress.

It's very kind and thoughtful of you to send a gift and to want to cheer him up. He will soon be part of your extended family! I like the ideas above of food, a cozy blanket, a book (if he is able to read after his injury and enjoys reading). A little gift a recent male relative enjoyed was some nice thick "slipper socks". I don't really know what else to call them. As he was recovering his feet were often cold. If it's not too personal even some flannel lounge pants, etc. You could do a gift basket with socks, lounge pants, etc.

Thank you all. Think a gift basket with slipper socks, nice blanket and heart friendly nuts will be perfect.

Love that Nerf Elite, adding that to my Christmas gifts for my DH.
