Assuming it's Formica and not tile? You can paint them, there are lots of pics and tutorials on the web. Just google painting formica countertops.

IMO painting a counter is at best a short termsolution but really without pics you will get very little help

Why not embrace it and have some fun with it?

She asked for short term solutions. Painting is one option and is more durable than many would believe.

I put this peel-and-stick vinyl on mine -- the kind that's developed specifically for countertops (it's thicker). I was able to get a seamless look by removing the backsplash, sink and faucet & re-installing over it. if anyone were to guess, they might think it's formica, which I'm fine with!

for the backsplash, I used real tile. there were some specific methods I utilized to make this job a little easier for a first timer.

if you're interested, I can type up more tips on how to make a project like this go easier. or we can help you come up with other ideas. but we really need to see pics of the space first!

I'd love to see a picture of the lime green countertop. I would paint the walls and/or vanity so they work with the color. (Without seeing it, I would suggest either navy or white on the cabinets.)

whatever you decide, be careful to prevent scorch marks. some designs of flat irons or curling irons are prone to it (this model, for example). it could happen with laminate or some types of quartz, but paint or vinyl is especially vulnerable. if this is a concern, set out a decorative tray or a silicone pad.

if you're not sure, you could do a test by applying some of the leftover paint or vinyl to a scrap of wood or large tile, and then setting the iron on it for about 10 minutes. just make sure it's sitting on the scrap exactly the same way that it would be on the counter, so it's a fair comparison.

I know it sounds weird, but it was definitely a concern for mine! I didn't want to ruin all the hard work I just did.

Is there anything wrong with the mirrors? They look nice and lots of people would envy those. If you're going to update the room further in the future, I'd probably keep them just to make sure you don't have to redo them in the next update.

Are there 2 different shades of green or is that just the photo? What material is it?

You definitely need a modern look. The old-fashioned style of the faucets isn't working. What I see from the examples below is a lot of black and white. Or, white plus a warm-toned wood and/or wicker. Both combinations look good.

Either way, repeat the green(s) in some combination of art, towels, or accent wall. I think it could look really sharp.

I'd use black for the fixtures (maybe you could spray paint the light fixtures and knobs?) and accent with green. White cabinets.

I agree with the other comments saying to embrace it. After all, it will be temporary. Change out the fixtures, paint the cabinets, switch to more modern vanity lights, and maybe stencil a bold pattern on the wall. Keep the mirrors, but consider adding a frame to them.

Is that quartz? I wanted that for my kitchen but it was discontinued by the time I got around to it.

It's the best thing about the bathroom. :) Get some more fun colors in there--I bet the previous owners were told to paint everything boring for resale.

Kiki J - based on the fact that you have under mount sinks, I don't think these countertops are a good candidate for peel-and-stick vinyl. you'll never be able to get a good seamless look with that. plus they're so long, you'd probably have to use two pieces.

honestly, I think these counters are really cool and just need some cosmetic changes around it. I thought you were going to post some terrible old laminate, but these look modern and very interesting! it's absolutely the wrong choice for the cabinets and hardware though. everything needs to be more modern. would you be willing to spend money to convert all of the hardware / faucets / lights to something modern? pick something you think you would use in the next big update.

try dark grey to lower the contrast. I would suggest decorating with graphic B&W accessories. and maybe a few wood touches to soften it up.

unfortunately not much can be done for the floors (besides big bath mats), but maybe this will be a decent holdover until you do a proper reno.

if you really don't like modern finishings, maybe consider painting the counter instead -- but with kids, it might chip. you can get this professionally done, which will be more durable. google "countertop refinishing" in your area.

but if you're going the professional resurfacing route, you may as well just get a new budget-friendly counter, such as quartz or a decent laminate. you could save money by keeping your hardware and then all you need to do is paint the boxes of your cabinets white (to match the doors) and decorate!

one more thing: if you also wanted a "bandaid" solution for the floors, consider peel-and-stick vinyl tiles, which are cheap and easy to cut with a utility knife.

Also, the mirrors are very old and have rusting on rims. I’d like to find cool mirror and vanity lights now that hopefully will work when I replace the vanity and floors. Is that a bad idea?

I think I am going to take suggestions from many of you to embrace the lime green for now, paint the cabinets (dark grey or white seem to be the suggestions) and then add matte black headwear.

And PS I am very much a fan of modern clean lines. I think why I struggle so much with this is that everything but the counter screams outdated and blah. Thanks all for encouragement about the counter.

One other thing, the counter is very low. Like at my mid thigh. I have no idea how much it would cost to remove the present counter top and then just put a new counter on with holes cut for water pipers and use basin sinks sitting above the counter. Thoughts?

Would you consider black for the vanity? I think the very bold green needs an equally bold color to balance it and I see black accent tiles. You could replace the mirrors with something black framed as well. It is an incredibly bold countertop but it's also kind of fun.

yes, getting new mirrors and lights now is a good idea! get what you want and style around them when it's time for the next reno.

you'll need new countertops for most kinds of vessel sinks unless you can find ones big enough to cover those holes. however, I personally hate vessels--it's harder to clean around them. they can get pretty splashy and I resent how annoying it is to stick my hand back there with the towel several times a day. personally, I would 100% take a sink that was too low over a vessel any day, but that's just me.

one final very easy upgrade: new bulbs! do this now. your most recent pics taken in natural light show me that your floors are actually grey (when I previously thought they were ivory). the color actually looks fine with these counters! swapping out your bulbs with something 3500-4000K will instantly improve this bathroom overall.

once you improve the lighting and everything else, you might decide to keep your tile for the time being. I do think the little black tiles are dated, so if you wanted to blend those in you could try to spot paint just those ones with enamel (like what you buy for model cars at a hobby shop). it wouldn't take long, but mixing the right shade of grey might be the biggest challenge.

LOVE @palimpsest’s concept! Covering the mirror wall in a wallpaper that has a hit of that green would make the counter look intentional, and add depth. That’s how I reached a truce with a mustard yellow powder room sink I inherited from my PO.

If the counter is too low, perhaps you can lift the entire thing by having a taller toekick/platform made that the current cabinets can fit onto. Of course, you will have to do some plumbing work, but if you're planning to keep the sinks where they are, perhaps you won't have to fix that particular issue on your next remodel.

I'm loving the last wallpaper from mama cita! We are in a new house and did a quick budget update on the kids bathroom. We did replace the cultured marble counter with a DIY concrete counter for $60 though it was only 48" wide. How many years are you planning on keeping the green counters and vanity?

If it's two years, that's a lot different from five to ten years in terms of spending money to make it tolerable. For two years, I'd add soft fluffy green towels and call it a day. For five or ten years, I'd either paint the counters or use a splashy wallpaper that I loved. Or both.
