Wallpaper Advice Needed for Wonky Wall

Hi,

I’m about to have my guest bathroom wallpapered, and I could use some advice an how to handle an odd part of the room. Close to where the shower tile ends on one side there is an outside corner; however, that part of the wall is uneven, such that at the top and bottom of the shower, the tile goes all the way to the corner, but in the middle there is about 1/4” of blank wall between the end of the tile and the corner.

The wallpaper installer said that he would run the wallpaper just to the edge of the corner and stop it there, since there isn’t enough space for him to wrap it around the corner to meet the shower tile exactly. I’m wondering if this will look okay, or if there is a better way to handle this area? Any thoughts are much appreciated! Thank you in advance!

I would end the wallpaper in the corner on the main wall. Then paint that 4" piece of wall the same color that you will have above your tile walls. After a while you won't even notice it.

Hi Debbi,

Thank you for the idea - although I was going to have the wallpaper run above the tile walls as well, so I’m not sure if there’s a way I could make that work? Here’s a picture of the room for reference:

Paneling - you can just paint the paneling (primer first!). Or if you wnated, you could fill in the grooves and skim coat the whole thing and then paint. A formoer co-worker did this at her house. Laminate - I installed Bruce American Home laminate in my LR and hallway this time last year. So far so good w/ mine. It is a good mid-grade flooring. If I could have afforded the higher-end stiff like Wilsonart, etc, I would have gone that way. It looks better and has a better sound. But it cost almost as much as real hardwood and was out of my price range. Stay away from the cheapy non-name stuff!

Need advice on painted wall paper

After stripping the walls, it will most likely require skim coat to restore to smoothness. Use a perforation tool over the wallpaper. Soak it well with Chomp! and remove it. Removal of all paste residue must be done at this time. Wash walls with Dirtex to remove the paste. Prime any damaged areas of wall with GARDZ. Perform all patching or skim coating. Prime entire walls with GARDZ and then repaint to the desired color and texture. Michael

You already had an overhead light. You could have gone with a single sconce on the side of the mirror. It isn't clear why you thought you were limited to that sconce for size. It doesn't compliment the wallpaper or vice versa. Industrial meets Swan Lake. It was smart to do the whole room with the same wallpaper not just 3 walls as you suggested you might.

I'd trust the wallpaper installer. He knows his craft as well as his abilities and how his paper can or can not handle an outside corner with little to no return.

Have him run the paper as he described. You'll have a nice crisp vertical line where the wallpaper terminates at the outside corner. Keep the reveal from the slight bow in the tiled wall painted the same color as the tile, and it'll blend.

Is the hole above the tile the shower head? I might be a bit concerned if you’re planning on putting paper behind that, if so… I can’t see how the paper would not get wet (at least a little bit)…. (Maybe you’re removing the shower head?)

Yes, that’s where the shower head will be. I’m planning to apply Decorator’s Varnish over the wallpaper in the area to protect it from any water. I know it’s not ideal, but I couldn’t get tiles that would match the old ones in order to extend the surround upwards . . .

The bathtub area in my bathroom has that tiny ledge like yours except mine is all the same width. MY wallpaper guy started the papering to cover the thin edge as opposed to ending it there.

I like your wallpaper guys suggestion to end it at the edge and blend the edge with the tile.

If this is also a shower, if you have a shower curtain---the wonky edge will be hidden.

Your wallpaper guy has it right.

And very bad idea to wallpaper inside the tub area above the tile. No matter what you do to it, it will become moist and start peeling away from the wall.

I would not do wall paper in the shower. When it does wind up having an issue, you are going to have to redo the whole room. When you said you couldn't match the shower tile, what was not matching?? That seems like a pretty classic tile. Even if you found something that was pretty close, you could do a decorative strip and then do the other tile above it. .
