Slugs in the cabbages(as an example)

How can I deal with slugs that have taken up room and board in my cabbages?

If I scatter ferric phosphate pellets this will be very successful at killing new intruders but I doubt that my present boarders will vacate their quarters whilst they have everything they need in the short term.

I can peel back the outer leaves and give them the old heave ho but might there be a more convenient method?

What about spraying the plants with salty water or similar?

Is that a goer or am I just going to damage the plants or make them pretty unpalatable (ie with fairy liquid)?

Once the slugs have got inside the leaves is it just a matter of harvesting the plant quite soon?
