I might have seen some on the tops of leaves, but if so, that's not the most common place to find them. For sure I've seen a zillion of them on the canes, as well as the undersides of leaves. I've also seen multiple times when canes were chewed all the way around, sometimes leaving just a thin thread holding the upper part of the cane still attached but hanging down totally upside down. And I've often seen long, often not so shallow, chewing cuts into the cane, going down or up the cane from somewhere in midcane. Usually, but not always, this results in the cane turning totally black throughout that cane area, necessitating that that dead cane be cut off and sealed. And if I didn't seal the ends of any sizable cut cane, that cane would become black fairly quickly and have to be cut again and sealed. Lots and lots of that happening here, starting in April and going on well into the fall. Until the start of Rose Rosette Disease here, this was by far the #1 problem for our roses--with blackspot, cercospora or anything else not even coming close. My theory is that because our yard has lots of woods and also some pretty low damp areas (especially last year when we had an unusual amount of steady rain throughout the summer instead of drought) it has or had conditions especially liked by sawflies. >I even found an article with the exact picture... Using photographs, I've seen many, many straight ones climbing canes and on stems. They are hard to notice with the naked eye, but enlarging pictures on the computer screen works wonders. Thanks for your information, Hoovb. Oh, well! We already do have the product, so we'll give it a try anyway, hoping that our varieties are a bit different than yours. Grasping at straws here, I know... The roses I started trying the product out with a couple of weeks ago have already succumbed to RRD, though, so I've no idea thus far on whether there's any chance that it might work here. Your post inspired me to actually read the label (novel idea!) and I did not see any of the specific types of slugs mentioned there that I could find in one of my books as some of the sawfly slug varieties that can affect roses, so your experience might well predict ours too. On the optimistic side, though, it does say that those particular varieties listed aren't the only kinds of slugs it will work with, and mentions also that it's effective for slugs on blueberries and apple trees (plants with some relationship to roses, I think). Anyway, we'll see... assuming that by the time RRD is finished with us here we have some roses left to try the product on. Oh, I did read one other interesting thing: if you don't want to pick each and every one off by hand--no chance!--one of my books says that a strong spray with the hose will work. I don't know what percentage will have the strength to climb back up, but the spray coming from the side will at least put them at some distance away from the cane (and for all our new roses in the pots, they'd have to climb the pots too). I've been mainly doing that for aphids, but it will certainly be a bonus if it helps with rose sawflies too! Best wishes, Mary

Hey Jennifer: I did use Sluggo once but you have to re apply it often. Seemed like a pain for the cost. We have three cats that are into positively anything so I have to use any chemicals if I can help it. So last year I went out and bought a whole bunch of plastic ashtrays from the dollar store. This is for my hosta beds. Once a week I fill up the ashtrays that are hidden behind the hostas with whatever the single cheapest beer is at the grocery. At that time I might rinse out the slug carcasses or I might not. It is just as effective to pour beer in with or without dead slugs (or what's left of them) in the ashtray. I do rinse them out as needed with the hose and then put them back in place. It works great. Furthermore I like the looks on my neighbors faces when I walk around the front yard at 6 a.m. Saturday morning carrying a six pack:) Kate

Hi Cora! Yes, a 10% ammonia solution in a spray bottle is by far the easiest to kill slugs on sight without damaging your plants or soil. (You should not use a salt shaker.) Just take any old spray bottle and put in 9 parts water, 1 part household ammonia (non-sudsing kind, if you have it). You may read about stronger solutions (more ammonia), but it is not necessary. Since you will be spraying the slugs as you see them, you will also see that a 10% solution works. Have fun! Carol

FWIW I am pleased with the quality. For my bathroom I bought: 4 sconces, medicine chest, sink and tub faucets, washstand and marble top, extension mirror, toilet paper holder -- basically everything except the shower and bath fixtures and tile, tub and toilet. I just bought everything in the Gramercy washstand/Vintage suite, exactly like I saw it in the catalog photo. So much for design creativity. I had all this stuff put away for nine months while our bathroom project languished. When we finally restarted was horrified to discover that the finish on the fixtures did not match. They were all supposed to be polished chrome. When I called one of the stores they escalated through their CS (the online CS is a total nightmare). It took some time and some anguish but finally they sent UPS to collect everything and they delivered all new stuff -- matching this time-- in polished nickel. (What I think happened is that the washstand base was mis-marked originally and was polished nickel when everything else was chrome.) In the end I much prefer the polished nickel and am happy thus far with the bathroom fixtures. Meanwhile, they just sent me a defective towel rack and I am still not refunded. The net net is -- the quality of the merchandise is very nice, but dealing with RH can be really stressful unless you happen to just find the right person. My take home message from all this is: if you have a problem with something you bought, even if ordered online, phone a store and ask for the manager. PS more to the point of the OP I also bought some RH polished nickel hinges and knobs for two cabinets that my husband is making, and I like them too.
