Outlet on Island--Problem.
Comments (27)We discussed the Mockette briefly. I'm sure the gasket is fine initially but in my experience the rubber for gaskets (or whatever is used in its place) doesn't last forever. We didn't want to be searching for a replacement gasket in 10 years. Also, we didn't want an extra bump to clean around on the counter. As far as the hole already cut, you might as well put an outlet in it. It won't count as a required outlet but someone using a laptop at the overhang might find it useful. You certainly want to make sure that any new location will pass inspection. BTW, does the island have a sink? Another good location for an outlet on an island is the panel in front of the sink. I find that location very practical to plug in the mini-food processor or immersion blender. Donna, the wood outlet covers came from arnev.com. They can be bought in a variety of wood species. You can select from one of the finishes they have or you can get them unfinished so someone locally can match them to your cabinet finish. The outlets themselves are Lutron in midnight satin....See MoreOutlets on side of kitchen islands? Are there any other options?
Comments (76)@LH CO/FL, I think you've been misinformed. The current Florida residential building code is based on the 2018 IRC which requires a receptacle outlet at a kitchen island. The code citation can be found earlier in this thread. The next code cycle (2021 IRC) provides a formula for the number of receptacle outlets required based on the area of the island with a minimum of one receptacle. I can't foresee any future version of the code requiring less than one receptacle outlet at an island which is intended to preclude the scenario Mark Bischak so entertainingly described....See MoreKitchen island outlet placement
Comments (6)Our plugmold was placed in my cabinets just above the top drawers below the granite top of the island. The cabinet maker allowed for the plugmold placement so I don’t know if there would still be room for you to install this way....See MoreElectrical outlet placement in full overlay kitchen cabinets
Comments (12)The outlet does not need to be 12" from the sink, your electrician is not "maybe" wrong about this, he is absolutely wrong. Period. There are however distance requirements from the countertop as others have posted. Now, you do need an outlet on the island however. In my experience, when I do use outlets on a fixed island, it is annoying to have the cords hanging over the side where people, dogs, kids, etc. can hit them and pull things off the top. I'd suggest getting a countertop GFCI pop-up outlet put in. They are NOT cheap for a good one, expect to pay several hundred just for a high quality module that looks nice and is well made, and then add the cost for the cutout to your granite work, but they are worth it IMO....See Morebertieb
