Windows Building a Home

Hi, we are planning to get our white windows painted black. ideas?

Hi,

We are building a new home and we opted for white windows during planning phase. But later, we wanted to change them to black windows. However, Our builder has already placed the order for windows and we would have to pay the restocking fee if we wanna change the windows. We are now thinking of painting the windows black. Any suggestions?

Compare the cost of field painting windows vs paying the restocking fee. Chances are the factory painting will be of higher quality.

Right. What brand and line are they? Some cant be painted without voiding the warranty.

Black. Its more period and no matter what you do in the future will always look good. Dark sashes improve the appearance of the windows as negative space on the facade. Black interior sashes also practically disappear when you look out the window (try it - look out a white framed window and a black framed window - see which one you notice and which one is practically not there.) Finally, white tends to look cheap - vinyl-looking, as you said. And why let a vinyl window company decide what color your windows are for you? I would paint it all, or paint the door only. With the single sidelight, I think you have a chance of things looking a little off-balance if you leave the trim white, but contrasting the door only could work. I'd have the transom match whatever you do with the sidelight, painted dark or light. I think it would be great to paint the inside of the door black as well, because it works with the interior of your home. If you were going with a bright color that you didn't want to see from the inside, only as an exterior color, that would be different. But leave the interior trim, sidelight, transom white.

We have painted a lot of things here over the years. Our preference is to paint the wood BEFORE the structure is built ;- ) so you build with the already-painted wood and just need to do minor touch-ups for screw/nail holes. We applied two coats of primer/sealer and then two coats of a Benjamin Moore exterior latex (because I can’t stand the smell of oil paint and the clean-up is more difficult with oil paint.) When the finish coats are not white, the primer gets tinted the same color as the finish coats. Some of the things we’ve painted are 20 years old now and have not needed repainting yet. White things do show dirt/algae easily and need periodic washing. The oil in cedar bleeds through the primer easily so we sometimes applied 3 coats of primer on it - and generally avoided using cedar again after that!

If you paint window sashes black, should you remove white window trim?

Thanks all! Especially for pics, was having trouble find ones that had both trim and drapes with black sashes that I liked but those made me feel better about both. These windows have removable grids that we found in attic when we bought home, so we’ll just paint them black and snap them back on and voila!

What series? If vinyl I would not paint them black period. If aluminum clad same thing do not paint them. Pay the restocking fee and get black if that is what you want.

I doubt the restocking fee is greater than the cost to sand and paint and there will be no guarantee the paint will adhere well and last.

But why ask us when you have the information needed to price both options?.

Almost anything can be painted to last with the proper material and prep. That said, those two things don't come cheap, especially if you are looking for a warranty on the finish. I agree with the others that a restocking fee is probably your best bet, assuming that it is not accompanied by crippling delays or simply being too late to cancel.

The quality you'll get when paintng an assembled window will not come close to the factory procedure in looks and longevity.
