Personally I think a twin is fine. Most of us probably grew up on a twin, she will live on a twin if she goes to college as someone pointed out. I think you have to add to that equation- what type of person is your daughter? Do you think she'll be a reader and like having a little bean bag chair in her own private room to read and do other things that she likes? With friends? Does she have a lot of siblings and this room is her refuge? Or not? Depending on circumstances would lead to two different choices. Also - will this be the room that carries her through her teenage years? Teenagers seem to want to den in their bedroom caves. More room less bed might be better. If she'll be trading up to a bigger room in the house or you are pretty sure you'll be moving before then, not so much an issue. A 10 year old may have preferences if all her choices are laid out and the ins and outs of it all explained - smaller bed, gets to keep dressers, get a bean bag, or a desk or a...whatever or does she prefer the bed and the way things are? You might walk her around a furniture store and let her try on a twin bed. I did think a trundle bed was very cool when I was small. Last - I have friends that have opted for the beds on stilts that have ladders to get more room. Many college kids do this as well, I have even seen home built ones at college that were built at half height, just heigh enough to fit a dresser under. At 10 she's old enough for that to be a safer bet depending on what type of sleeper she is.

You might want to post this in the Building a Home forum. Be sure to explain what you want to accomplish, if the home is already existing or if you are modifying a plan for a house yet to be built, and what walls can move, if any, and if you can expand beyond the footprint. To me, this looks like one floor of a two-flat, as they are called in Chicago, which would limit what you can do.

Thanks Susan. Actually the furniture I’m getting are part of a specific group, but don’t all match. I know there is this design trend to get mismatched pieces, but to me it’s too much like getting the hand me downs from my parents for picking up random items that don’t go. Right now I have mission style Sauder dressers I bought at Shopko and a vintage looking nightstand, and they don’t match at all. Having some sort of coordination will be welcome. I could use some help picking out which night stand though. Here are the pieces. I’ll post the two nightstands in a separate comment.

A couple of thoughts: Maybe hang wide curtains/draperies flanking the window behind the bed, so the bed is backed for its whole width rather than "hanging out" beyond the window? The molding frames on each side of the window would then need to be narrower (to my eyes, anyway), so they are entirely visible beyond the curtains. Something like this? (Not decor suggestions particularly, just showing how the bed wall might be arranged.) Plan the picture frame molding placement carefully, because it will determine size and placement of everything else in the room: furniture, art, mirrors, lamps, etc. Your inspiration photo feels beautifully "right" because everything relates perfectly to the moldings. I love picture frame molding, but it does constrain you.
