Cookbooks - Do you pay full price?
Comments (22)After posting earlier this weekend, I ventured into our local Friends of the Library bookstore on Sunday and happened across three "finds". 1) Sharon O'Connor's Menus and Music. This looks like a cookbook more for a gourmet, but she has suggestions for the classical music that should accompany each menu/item. The book originally came with a cassette tape (published in 1985)with music by the San Francisco String Quartet. Unfortunately, this copy didn't come with the cassette. The book is still quite new - the spine isn't bent or cracked in any way. I can probably find much of the music in my own CD collection! $2. (No cover price listed.) 2) Jeannie Jones' "Homestyle Cooking Made Healthy". This was another one that was so new it creaks when you open it. The recipes are all healthy and the pictures, beautiful! I had checked this one out of the library and decided it was worth owning if I could find a used copy. $3. (Back cover says $27.95) 3) Okay, this one is OT - sheet music for Johnny Mercer's "Dream"! 50c. I love to browse our Friends of the Library Bookstore's sheet music. I've come across some good "finds"! DonnaR/CA...See MoreSecretary cabinet - where do you put it and how do you use it
Comments (9)My mom had hers at the bottom of the steps to the second floor and at the entrance to her kitchen in a hallway. It made a great place to set down your keys when entering the house. Hers had a top to it and she put collectibles in there. In the years since it was moved into a corner of her living room where she could open it up to use it for letter writing. My sister now has it proudly displayed in her living room. A wonderful, usual piece of furniture. In the drawers were the phone books, catalogs etc. Mary...See MoreDo you use a cookbook holder?
Comments (14)Sharon, that's a great idea, to use it for help in typing recipes. I don't usually type them until they're tested, and I know they deserve a permanent place in my files. You can be sure I'll use the help it offers now! barnmom, I'm glad to hear from someone who actually uses one. I can see this would take up serious space if it's not being used, but in ''cooking mode'' I understand the appeal of leaving it out. Annie and Linda, I'm not surprised you wouldn't have need of this! I've never actually ''needed'' one, but I was looking at all my cookbooks feeling like there had to be an easier way to use them than my current system. (I tend to walk back and forth, back and forth, using many steps trying to keep my books clean by keeping them at one end of the kitchen, while I cook somewhere else.) I bought the books because they all had recipes I wanted to try. Hopefully, having a protected place to prop them will inspire me to start using them more. I've been sticking my printed recipes to the knife block with a magnet so they're more vertical and easy to read, and I realized I really like having the recipe available where I'm cooking. Then again, some days it's just easier to come here and let you all inspire me instead!...See MoreWhere do you store your cookbooks?
Comments (17)We will have built-in pantries on either side of the kitchen and in one, the top half slides out for my most used cookbooks. I am so excited about this solution, which we came upo with when meeting with our cabinetmaker. We also have an antique hutch that will house most of the others. It's a bit of a problem for me, because I have over 300! :-) Eliz...See Moreluvsparis
