Our internet has been spotty recently so I don't know if I will be successful with this post. We thought it was our router, but we bought a new one and that hasn't helped. Apparently it's a problem with our provider, but they can't come until next week to fix it.

We have finished moving our daylilies for the year. Actually, we are not done--we left so many in place. This is the first year we haven't been able to move all our selects. I hate it because it will be that much more work next season.

Here is Bob with one of the best selects. The scapes are about 53 inches tall with anywhere from 33-40 buds.

This seedling decided to bloom a little early. It was planted just this year. If I had noticed the scape earlier, I would have picked it off, but it was fully developed and ready to bloom when I saw it. I figured it had already used the maximum energy and picking it off now would do no good. It shows some promise, but the plant looks horrible. It will probably die. It is Lady Stephanie Victoria Redding X Terrorsaur.

This is a rebloom on (Ebony Pools X Barracuda Bay) X Love for Jesus. The color is deeper in person.

Delinquent Doll is a late bloomer and then it reblooms too.

The hibiscus look good at this time of year.

Hello there Sparky. He's a cutie...............I am amazed at how tall that scape is. That's incredible. It really shows up with Bob holding it............I agree that it's rather frustrating not to get all your "chores" done so that you have them left over to do in the spring. I'm spending most of my time just watering it's been so dry for the last month or more and I hope our first freeze holds off so that I can finally sit down and see what I've been working to maintain throughout the hot summer months................I like that purple dayliliy. Hope it holds up over winter for you.............Maryl

What a scape on that first one! Do you have a photo to show what the bloom looks like? It's nice that you have a few seedlings reblooming. I had one seedling reblooming earlier in the week, but it's done now. I don't see any more scapes coming, so I think we're out of daylily blooms here.

Uncle needs to learn to see the humor in things I guess lol I like the white. Does it bloom constantly? Tall? Bushy? I had bought a green one called Envy. It looks pretty but as for growing nicely like a pretty bushy plant...or blooming more then every once in a while...NOTHING . SO maybe it needs more sun but not one I need to have again next year. I may be breaking some unspoken gyno-American law by saying this, but... Yea for man chair. And man room, if the space is available. And dedicated man bathroom. We (mostly unintentionally) demasculinize our men in every way possible. They need some way to recharge their testosterone or they will become the transgendered version of "purse girl" (the ugly friend who slops around after you and usually stays behind to watch your purse while you go have fun). To me, a man chair is much like a docking station. In more ways than I can count, actually. A woman saying, "Is there a woman chair?" is very much like a child asking why there's a Mother's Day, and a Father's Day, but no Child's Day. I despise nesting tables. There are few things I want less than to pay for 3 tables so that I can only use 2/3 of each. 6/3 = 2, not 3. Me - Husband, do you like the green towels or brown? Husband - Does one dry me better than another? Me - No. Husband - Then get the one you want. I'm going to pick wrong anyway. Me - But which do you think would look better with the Vasseliva print and hammered copper vessel? Husband - The what? Me - The "crap on the wall" and the "crap on the counter." Husband - Oh... haha, yeah you have a lot of crap. And thus goes the cycle of futility. I can't comprehend how he can have zero interest in coordinating hues or complimentary scale anymore than he can understand my utter lack of interest in home theater gadgets or the latest motherboard. Within 10 years, everything in the house will be hers. Give the guy a chair, for chrissakes...

Back when I first got on this forum the fights between the chemical and organic advocates were legend. People got permanently banned from using any Gardenweb forum. It was insane. When some of the favorite gurus were banned and formed a new forum there was a long hiatus in arguments. Interestingly, many of those chemical advocates have since tried organics and converted. I met Morpheuspa on another forum. Over there he convinced me of the value of getting the soil chemistry right for the purpose of making it a more habitable environment for the soil microbes. He is an expert at reading soil tests, but he's also persnickety about where the soil test comes from. Over on that other forum there was a move to find the best soil test lab in the country. They quickly narrowed it down to Logan Labs in Ohio and UMASS in MA. These labs provide a complete test down to micronutrients for $25. Other labs can do it, too, but they cost $75 and up to get the same tests. The other thing they liked about LL and UMASS is the tests were repeatable when cross tested with each other and repeatable when the same soil samples were sent in at different times. Other labs failed in this respect. So rather than recommend getting a local test and not getting good results, we have been recommending Logan Labs. Check this forum for the kind of analysis that morpheuspa does for the people who post their soil test results here. I converted to organic in about 2003 after I tried using corn meal to kill fungus on my roses. It worked so I tried it on a bad spot in my grass. It worked there, too, so I converted completely. I don't know when morph went organic, but he retains one application of a high N chemical fert as a winterizer after the grass stops growing but before it goes completely dormant. There are as many forms of organic gardening as there are vegetarians, so we all have to just get along. Back in 2011 mrmumbles posted a picture of an organic test he had done. As I recall he was skeptical about organics before that test. Here's his picture.He applied alfalfa pellets in mid May and took the picture in mid June. The color change, improved density, and growth are all obvious in the picture. I've been posting this picture on various forums ever since then. I believe it has been responsible for thousands of people converting to organic lawn care. If you want to learn much more about soil microbes, read The Soil Biology Primer. Get comfortable - it's about 50 pages long.

That is a very tall scape! Bud count is great too! Too bad if the first one dies since it shows it could be a real winner. And Spark is a cutie!

Those are tall scapes! I dont see how you do what you do-such work! Planting as many seedlings as you do, evaluating, moving selects….I get tired just thinking about that energy!!! Sparky looks like a good supervisor for that work! That hibiscus is lovely in all those shades of color.

Debra, I think the following photo is the tall seedling. We planted a bunch of the same cross and they all look similar. Many of them were well budded, though not as tall. Sonoran Desert Rose tends to give good scapes. These are all late bloomers too.

As far as the work is concerned, we are really overwhelmed this year. Bob and I usually work a couple of hours in the garden after he gets off from work. We got behind on weeding and just never got caught up. We hope next year is different. We really want to cut the collection down by at least 300-400 plants and even more if we can. We have too many that we just don't pay any attention to so they should go. We are also out of room. We have a spot to put one more little bed and then that is it. I didn't make as many seeds this year (only about 1500+) so that should help for next year.

We get behind in the spring since we have so many news ones to plant. That will not happen next year. We might buy a few in Canada (if the Can-Am is held) and we will get a few club plants, but I don't intend to buy any more. I haven't even looked at the Lily Auction recently.

Sparky is our constant companion in the garden. We used to have a dog Missy that followed us around the garden. Missy died several years ago and then we got Riley. Riley is lazier. He will sniff around and then go sit in the shade, usually on the patio. Then he begs to go in. He doesn't like the hot weather. It's Sparky that following us around now. I call him my hood ornament because as soon as we stop the gator, he jumps on the hood and lies there. He doesn't even want to move when we start the engine. He also feels the need to fertilize any new tilled earth we are working with. He is a sweet cat.

Nancy: Wonderful pic showing the scapes on that seedling. Wow, that is one big plant. I feel your pain with all that work. We had a cat named Sparky too. Yours looks like he enjoys having a bit of shade from his perch.

I love hearing stories of people's garden kitties. I hope to see young Sparky being your hood ornament next year..........I do love your rationale about adding new daylilies next spring. "No more EXCEPT"....... That's how it always happens-lol................Maryl

It seems that weeds everywhere have been overwhelming, but the daylilies have also really grown this fall--more than ample moisture.
