White Inset Cabinets: Beaded or Flat?
Comments (14)Katieob, I have white inset (but not beaded) cabs by Plain and Fancy. I really wanted beaded cabs but the ID argued against it. Because my kitchen has more than one focal point and several dramatic details, he pushed me to consider a more subdued, more minimalist statement in my choice of classic cabs and hardware. I am now pleased to see how right he was about that! (Funny how there were so many design choices I thought I couldn't live without at one point in my planning process. Yet, when it came time to introduce some of those same choices into the actual design mix, they just did not work as well as for me as they did in photos, in someone else's kitchen, etc.) BTW, from your posts I'm gathering we share much in common design and taste-wise. For sure, we share an appreciation for icebox/cupboard latches! Here's a tip for you and others who also like this kind of hardware: I got mine from www.meritmetal.com (See Item #9215 under "solid brass cupboard catches"). After an exhaustive search for those latches, Merit was the only manufacturer I could find who made them in satin nickel -- a finish that was critical to me as it's the finish for the rest of my hardware, faucets, etc. These latches are now installed on my (unbeaded) white inset cabs and I can't get over how beautiful they are. They are solid cast brass and very well-crafted with alot of heft. I did not purchase them directly from Merit, however, as the company is not a retailer. Instead, they referred me to a local source, The Brass Center,(another great design source in NYC and online at www.thebrasscenter.com), where I got them at a substantial discount. How do I know? Well, I note that Cliffside is selling their icebox latch online for $48.50 per latch. However, the Brass Center sold me Merit's icebox latches for only $31.50 each and then shipped them immediately! Still not cheap by any means. But, I go on at length about these latches not only were they were so darn hard to find, but also, once I finally located them, I felt I got them at a "bargain" price. Comments (5)Hmm. Well the company says they're now doing this because it secures the door to the drawer body better. They were plastic but apparently just changed to metal , and KD is getting samples of that hardware next week to show me. I would LOVE to see photos of yours, buehl, if it isn't a huge inconvenience. Perhaps they are the same and I should just not worry about it. Metal might look better than the gommy tan plastic ones I saw last week... I sure liked the nice, clean look of just the wood dovetailed edge, though! :( I don't have any photos myself since I just placed the order and the cabs are 6 weeks out......See MorePainted Flat Panel Cabinet doors - MDF or wood panel?
Comments (17)From the attached link: Raised Panel - Solid Even though the panel is called solid, it is not usually made of a single piece of wood. Wood expands and contracts with changes in humidity, and this can cause the door to split and crack. To counteract the problems of natural movement in a solid wood center panel, the panel is usually constructed using several pieces of solid stock lumber glued together. The wood strips used to construct the panel may not all match in graining and color. As in the case of the slab door, the door's strength comes from the manner in which the pieces of solid wood are reversed as they are glued. The panel is then cut on all four sides, so the center is higher than the edges. The face of the panel is usually flush with the front surface of the stiles and rails, with the edges forming a tongue which fits a corresponding groove cut into the door frame. The groove is slightly larger than the panel's edge to allow the panel to float in the frame. This simply means that the panel has room to expand and contract during humidity changes, reducing the risk of the panel cracking or splitting. I gather from the Woodmode site that this is how they construct raised panel doors as they describe their raised panel doors as being constructed from solid wood. How big an issue the movement of the centre panel in a flat panel door will be probably depends on geography (I have seen some dramatic examples here that am sure would not be acceptable to many folks while I tend to think the hairline cracking I have seen is part of the charm and patina of age of painted cabinetry. In terms of Woodmode they do kiln dry all their wood which may in part explain why they have not have felt they would get better performance from an MDF centre panel that some companies are opting for. I also think it is a market issue a lot of Consumer's in the US have a real aversion to composite wood products regardless of the possible benefits (this does not really carry over to Europe or Canada). Cabico and many other Quebec companies offer 100% MDF doors for paint finishes (same opaque finishes are usually available on maple at Cabico). Lots of their MDF door styles are raised panel. Comments (4)Do you mean shaker style doors or a truly flat slab door? If you mean a slab door then I would lean toward something sleek and modern to complement the modern look of a slab door. Drawer handles at roughly 1/3 the width are visually pleasing ... except if you have narrow drawers (like 12" wide or less) and then I go with "what does my hand fit into nicely?". I think I wound up with about a 4.5" handle on those drawers, just a smidge larger than 1/3 of the width. On drawers that are wide, like 30+", you might struggle to find a single pull that is large enough. I used 8" handles on my 30" wide drawers because the style I liked didn't come any larger - unless I used an appliance pull and those just looked wrong. It looks fine, larger would have looked better but my island has a 30" base, 24" base, 30" base in series and the drawer handles are consistent so it seems reasonable. Good luck, they are expensive little things when you need so many!...See Morenanzhouse
