Comments (19)I got some decently lit pics today, here's a few more from the collection! A better view of the big one: A bonsai-esque dwarf variety of some kind: This one is a broadleaf cultivar with blotchy colours.. I had to cut it back as its old leaves were not acclimating well and spider mites were starting to have at it. So, I went for a drastic haircut, which seems to have worked out okay, as it's been growing back slowly the last couple months! Might be same cultivar as the big one, not sure though as the "rippled" effect seems to appear in some leaves. I've cut it back each year for two years, hoping to develop a nice looking bushy plant some day out of it. Hard to get a good pic of this one on an iPhone camera but it's certainly one of the stranger ones I have. I think the cultivar was labelled as "devil's paintbrush" or somesuch. Didn't handle going from the garden centre to the home very well as first, but after a couple haircuts its growing well enough. Haven't fully recovered the colour yet though, wondering if it needs more or less sun. Bit of a weird one I haven't seen at any garden centres since getting it.. long leaves like the Banana cultivar but fades to red/pink instead: The second croton I ever bought. When I got it it was very leggy and in a tiny 2" container, I've given it regular haircuts which have done well for it. (The third one I ever bought has since died, as has any of that cultivar I've bought since.. the very-long-leaved brght-yellow ones just don't last long with me for some reason!) This one seems to be a relatively close cultivar to the previous, but the leaves seem different to me, enough to nearly convince me it's a different cultivar.. it certainly grows slower and with larger leaves: Bought this one last week. I noticed today as an added bonus it has started to product a flower stem! I guess it likes me. Comments (36)Thanks again all: Boa is doing much better. She is eating like a horse, but still doesn't want to be left alone. I can't believe the difference in her since I stopped the antibiotics. She demands food now, and her catmilk. Her and Bear got into their first fisticuffs in a long time when I was taking too long to get the food in the dish. She got a huge dish of whipped cream yesterday (her favorite) and didn't leave a smidgen in the bowl for Apache to finish. She is back on the tapazole now for the hyperthyroidism and doesn't even know it's in her food. I am breathing a sigh of relief. I know nothing can live forever, but I can hope. Comments (10)no, not at all 3 or 4 days....maybe 5. You will see them stand tall and hold up against the wind and not shy away from sun. I place them in the shade and out of the wind all day my firstday. Then they get filtered sunlight in the morning (and a bit of wind) on the second day and back in the shade from 9am till dusk. Then they get dawn till noon sun the third day and depending on how they do during the am sun and mid day sun they are ready for their first full day in the elements by their 4th or 5th day. My hollyhocks really looked shabby from the wind on their second day because I left them out too long, but in two days they were study and looking for the sunlight again. Comments (45)I'm guestimating here and all in-ground: Ponderosa lemons...getting swamped this year with over ten bushels (wild flying guess that's probably way under estimating as I have been picking now and then since November) from ten trees that are significantly producing. About ten more young trees making smaller quantities. I juiced five gallons of juice Saturday and froze most. I tried making lemon jelly using the seeds for a source of pectin. It tastes good but didn't set up. I'm picking the fruit into a contractor-size wheel barrow and probably have another load or two left in the trees. I put a box out by the road the other day with a free sign. Folks took about half. I think I can give away another big box or two and will have to either juice the rest or let it rot under the trees. I got into this predicament because the trees come up from seed and I just transplanted trees from the compost all over the yard. Now I'm needing to thin out the herd because I'm somewhere between swamped and commercial but don't have a market or the time to go commercial. Satsumas....probably 4 bushels from two trees. I LOVE Satsumas! Calamondin.....1/2 to 3/4 bushel from one large tree. This crazy tree is blooming now! Kumquat......1/2 bushel from two trees. I eat off the tree, make a pie now and then, and freeze some puree' for later. Meyer.......1/2 bushel from one small tree. I'm picking a few now and then for recipes.
