Does This Pergola Location Work?

Hey there, thanks for reviewing. We might add a ground-level square off our raised paver patio. In the image below, will the pergola look weird in real life because the height is juxtaposed strangely against our elevated patio? Similarly, could it clash with your line of sight from our house? If so, how might you change the design? Make the extension larger and push the pergola back? I don't think the existing patio is large enough to support the pergola on the top level. Thanks for your help!

Is this to scale? If so then definitely will look off.

I'm not 100% sure, but assuming it is to scale, is there a good alternative layout that would look better in your opinion? Ex. putting the pergola and ground-level space off to the left (facing the house) or something like that? Thanks for your time!

Thanks, Brooke. I read a discussion about One Time Wood on one of the forums here. It seems to be some sort of a plastic product, and it is also pigmented; I need something that is clear. I would love to use something that lasts for 7 years, but...The discussion is interesting, anyway, with users really liking it (though not having had it in use for seven years as yet) and others who haven't used it with some rather negative opinions! cuestatoble - Thank you also for the info about the copper naphthenate. I think I will probably use it on the bottom of my posts of my shade garden structure. They do touch the soil and I don't want them to rot out! how does LED undercabinet lighting work with hard wires?

You will need a separate transformer at each location if you plan on connecting to the 120v hard lines. If possible, you can run the low voltage lines in the walls and eliminate the need for additional transformers. If you are still at a stage this is an option, it will save you a little bit of $$. Check the environmental lights website, their instruction guide details everything you will need.

It follows ice-water-stone-fire and doesn’t have the dishwasher between the sink and stove, so it’s good. If the floorplan layout is what you are changing it from, then you are greatly increasing the function.

HI -- Being that it is a barn style house I think having some wood post and beam structures added to the entrance , the side patio ,and a little over the garage doors . It would be a fitting feature .Find an Architect that works with post and beam and have a mock up done to see what it would look like . This house looks wonderful .

Maybe post a floor plan of the area tough to be sure of much from the pictures. Also that does not look like a scaled picture but that just may be me.

The steps look a bit high, what is the height of the riser? Also, what is the distance between the lower step and the top of the trellis where the trellis is closest to the step? It looks like almost half of the trellis is over the lower step.

In first pic it looks like one would be decapitated by string lights when walking on upper paver patio & also would be looking over top or at level of top of pergola. in second pic looks like lights are maybe angled downward from pergola to top of door & window - still too low for safely standing on paver patio. Looks like they’re rightat level of guy’s head. Seems like pergola needs to be several feet taller if left in current spot but it would be better to move it several feet away from paver patio to take care of the head clearance problem & have a proper lower height pergola. The string lights should be angled up from pergola to a spot well above door height on house.

Is this a complete redo of the backyard or just putting in a pergola? What is the purpose of the pergola? Will those be new plantings? Right now it is not in the right position for all the reasons KW stated.

You mention you can't put pergola on the patio, why not? Is this a ready made thing you have found, or will someone be building it for you?

I would either put it on the patio or
I would redo the patio and take out the low border walls and extend the patio and square it off, opening it to the backyard. Then put a fire pit area with chairs on the ground level.

If not wanting that or budget constraints, then at a minimum move the pergola 6' away from the patio for comfort and better flow.

Is this an actual photo of your built up patio or a digital envisioning? There is something wrong with this patio. Stairs don’t look right and pergola is not proportionately accurate

To me it appears you're crowding all your improvements, layering them on top of each other, when you probably have plenty of space to work with. I'd move the pergola. It would help to see a daylight picture of more of the space.
