The Very First Pickering and a Gift
Comments (17)I am back from my cruise and have the mango review. They ripened up to nothing less than fabulous! No fiber, sweet and juicy as could be. I lugged 7 of them along in my carry on luggage onto the ship and let the last few finish ripening in the cabin. One was too big to eat by myself so I gave the other half to the servers on the cruise ship....they were from India, Phillipines, Thialand and Indonesia. They were going nuts about the taste and size of these mangoes!!! I sprouted a few of the seeds and will graft them with budwood from the mother tree when they get big enough!...See MoreFoodie gift suggestion for Smokin' Neighbor
Comments (21)Thanks a lot for the suggestions. Not sure which direction I'm headed yet, but all of you have given me ideas to consider. Got a smile out of the "coupon" suggestion. First thing that came to mind was a hundred "Get your puppy out of my yard NOW" vouchers. I had a few other thoughts, but sharing them would give away just how bad of a neighbor I am. dcarch - What's HF and where do I get their coupons? 800W sounds perfect for keeping the Christmas lights lit in the case of a power failure during the holidays. For just $86, not much to lose. John - Lost power to the whole house. The cable line survived. (Other side of the house.) Ext cord from neighbor's house kept bare essentials powered up for the most part, probably didn't run my 5K generator much more than five hours total throughout the ordeal. (The generator is another thank-you I need to deal with. It was given to my cousin by a customer a couple days before the storm, cousin had no use for it and gave it to me.) Anyway I'm back and running as of a few hours ago. I smiled when for the first time in six days the bathroom light actually turned on when I flipped the switch!...See MoreWacky Gifts for Foodies
Comments (21)I just had to report back that I took a "Roast My Weenie" rootin' tootin' cowboy to my previously mentioned party. I wrapped him and then did a little extra package with a frozen wiener (so it would still be "fresh" by the time the gifts were being opened). Well, it was the hit of the party, except the woman who ended up with it happened to be a vegetarian. The wiener was quickly replace by a carrot, which looked equally as ridiculous as the wiener...so now she has a carrot griller. I also bought Marsha Mellow, which I thought I would take to next year's party. But my dear friend ended up having a 2nd mastectomy on December 21, so I'm giving her Marsha and a bag of marshmallows for those times she's feeling a need for some humor. Thanks again for this thread. Great fun!...See Moredad--once a foodie, always a foodie!
Comments (13)oh kathy--i'm sorry to hear that! i figure dad really has been pleased along the way but he's not gonna let us know that because it would just be out of character, ya know? anyway, that's the way i hope it is, and for you too! attached is a pic from this summer when i went home for a visit and includes my little sister and her daughter. you'd think he'd smile then but again, it's not his way. but he most assuredly loves us and was always one of the hardest working men i know! my oldest brother was born with a number of problems and needed numerous operations through his young adulthood. insurance didn't cover that--dad worked several jobs for a number of years to take care of things. fortunately, the other 4 of us were fine but man, not a decent set of teeth in the house! we all had braces because they thought that was important, even if we weren't exactly thrilled at the time. in fact, i remember being particularly resistant to the idea but i'm certainly happy my parents were smart enough to just plod on and take care of things. the other important thing was education. we were free to pick a career but by golly, we were going to college! i have no idea how they did it, but each of us was given that opportunity and a couple of us even finished! but i don't recall that turning him into a grinning fool either--not even when my youngest brother got his JD and a couple years later, his PHD. it's just not his way, you know? i'm sorry some of you are missing your dads--i do know what that's like. Mom died 20 years ago and that's been harder on poor pop than anything else i'm sure. he said at the time that his biggest regret was that they didn't get to celebrate their 50th anniversary--they only made it to about 46. sure wish i knew a way to fix that one... but it's almost time to pack up his christmas box. and we found the cardigan sweater vests that he wears all winter long and that i wasn't able to find the last 2 years. maybe it won't exactly make him smile, but i think it might at least please him a little bit. that and a few more cadbury bars and an extra large jar of WHOLE cashews (old family joke) and NO dry or clumpy popcorn, even though i know he'll be eating the nuts and the chocolates instead of breakfast. but at 91, i think he ought to be doing whatever he wants, don't you? happy birthday again, pop! Here is a link that might be useful: dad and crew...See Moremojomom
