mold under lid of canning jar
Comments (12)Hi Kate, By now you've most likely got an answer you're satisfied with however, I'd like to share my experience with you. Out of seventeen jars of homemade tomato sauce I found 4 that had black spots on the lids. The first one was AFTER I'd ingested some of the sauce!!! Long story, short: I talked to a county extension agent, and described the material exactly like you did: it was more like "soot" rather than "mold". (I carefully removed one of the spotted lids and took a toothpick to scrape some of the black deposit. It was dry and powdery, not wet, smelly or sticky.)The contents of the jars smelled clean and bright and the seal was tight with the proper popping sound when removed. Here's a direct quote from the 2006 "Ball Complete Book of Home Preserving" by Kingry and Devine, P.425 "Problem...Black spots appear on the underside of metal lid. Cause: Natural compounds in some foods cause brown or black deposits on the underside of the lid. This deposit is harmless and does not mean the food is unsafe to eat. Prevention: None..." I have been using my canned tomato sauce and it has been fine. Cream...See MoreUmbrella Kids cookie jar lid
Comments (3)The thing is, the lids usually get broken first. One can find jars without lids easier than they can find lids without jars through collectors. I live in the vicinity where many art potteries were located, and the pottery sales lots often have tubs of odd lids purchased when the potteries were doing their production runs. IOW extras. The availability of finding an extra lid here is much higher than anywhere else I can think of, if you know what you are looking for, and if it's a line produced locally over the years. How old is your cookie jar? Who made that line? Where?...See MorePlastic lids for canning jars
Comments (18)Thanks everyone! Carol, emailing them is a good idea. I will dig up their email address later today. I probably won't like their answer either but what do I have to lose? LOL We don't really have an older people community here... there's only one retirement home in our area and I have been going to their garage sales but haven't found anything that fit. I will continue to look. I like going to garage sale so that gives me another excuse to do that. Annie, I like the ideas of using the jars to keep beans and other non acidic items. I have a feeling that I may end up using them for just that. I probably will arrange the jars in a way to display the different colors of beans so they will all look pretty. :-) Lou, I don't know anything about volunteer fire companies. Obviously, we don't have them here. We have a local buy & sell paper called the Bargain Finder. I check their postings periodically and so far haven't found anything. Thanks again ladies. It's nice to belong to a great online community like this!...See MoreHarvest Canning Jars where do I find lids?
Comments (6)Bernardin does still sell the Gem jar lids (78 mm) but what're impossible to find are the old WWII 63 mm lids and rings. Those extra-narrow mouths were made to save on metal as a part of the war effort. I'd say the odds of finding any of those are very slim. You could enter a saved search on Ebay and they'll email you if anything turns up. Save the search for a year and it's possible something will appear. Carol...See Morespswash
