Alternatives to carrara marble for bathroom with glass-enclosed shower
Comments (12)Here in Detroit, the subway tiles were mostly used in the basement laundry or secondary basement kitchen areas or other areas where servants worked. Our 1920s and 1930s bathrooms were done in beautiful 6 x 6 tiles in pottery-style glazes. These are the kind of glazes where there is variation tile-to-tile, so that there is a feeling of texture to the walls. The walls were usually tiled to the ceilings in the kitchens and in most of the bathrooms. Very pale yellow, peach, greens, blues, some tans are found. I believe that our long period of low housing values was a savior to our Detroit ceramic tile in older homes. No one would remodel a house that was not worth much, so we still have house after house with original tile and plumbing. We have an art pottery works called Pewabic here and some sun rooms have floors and fountains done in their distinctive darker Craftsman colors. There is a series of websites for each big city in the US called "Curbed [city name]" and Curbed Detroit shows these old homes and mini mansions and real mansions when they come up for sale. If you like old homes, check and see if you have a "Curbed" site for your city and subscribe. I have learned so much about old houses and the renewal of Detroit reading that website....See MoreAlternative to spa blue glass tiles for shower
Comments (6)Important - glass tile is not created equally. You MUST use the manufacturers recommended setting material. If the glass has a paper backing for color the alkali in the thinset could deteriorate it. Results are very ugly. Takes a while before it shows up. Just because the bag states glass tile mortar does not mean it applies to all. Some glass requires use of mastic therefore it can't be used in a shower. Some allow the use of epoxy grouts & adhesives others do not. Some recommend waterproofing/crack isolation membranes some no. You may not be able to use whatever tile you want. Do the research as I'm sure others have done :) Unfortunately the majority of installers won't. Do not let the manufacturer tell you to follow TCNA guidelines as they specifically state to check with manufacturer. The preceding was a consumer alert:)...See MoreISO alternative blinds for sliding glass door
Comments (10)I have just moved and had the same dilemma in my new home. At first I looked at the Hunter Douglas sheer verticals but they cannot be cleaned expect via an ultrasonic bath...$$$$. But then I found the SmartDrape by Norman. It is individual verticals, half solid fabric and half sheer fabric. They are washable, no clanking with the soft fabric and does the job. What do you think?...See MoreFramless glass shower door/enclosure with Kohler shower pan?
