Border around this house (Need Ideas)
Comments (1)You first need to ask yourself how you are going to use the areas you want to landscape? Also ask yourself what kind of maintenance you're willing to put in? And ask yourself what do you want to see when you look out over the area, what colors, shapes, etc.? For example, if I owned your house, I'd have an outdoor table and chairs there, I'd want shade, perhaps an outdoor fire pit, and an herb garden for cooking with some pretty, nice smelling flowers as a border. Farther from the house I'd plant a big vegetable garden with a fence to keep out critters, and some fruit trees and shrubs, with a path leading to that area. But you see, that's me, and not necessarily you! If you were my mom, on the other hand, you'd want a perrenial flower garden with lots of rose shrubs. But if you want low maintenance, that's a nightmare! You might like the tidy low maintenance look of some dwarf evergreens. You might want more privacy or to block views of the neighbors yard. Start by asking yourself some basic questions like I posed, and then maybe ask for some specific suggestions once you decide what you want from your landscape....See MoreDecorating around Queen Anne red velvet chairs
Comments (80)We have a Home Decorators Collection nearby so I was able to go by and take a look at that sofa and chair I posted. Obviously this isn't furniture built to last for 30+ years. But I am not paying the money where I would expect it to be. If this was a room that was our primary hang out space I would be willing to invest (as we are planning on doing for the family room in looking at a Hancock and Moore leather sofa.....if I can afford it), but expect this furniture to be "lightly used". I think with the addition of a couple of pillows it will be reasonably comfortable for guests and conversation (obviously not to snuggle in for a movie). I actually like the printed fabric, it appeared more of a pale blue overall appearance than the gray that I had expected. Hopefully will look OK with the hide rug (which - if not, I have already decided would look nice in the master bedroom). But fingers crossed this will all come together. I think I will likely need a different color on the walls than the Wedgewood Gray, but that can be selected later. OK - I have been looking forever for that red peacock type pillow and cant find it! I really do think that the accessories will hopefully be what ties this all together....See MoreDesign Around #7 Vict./Queen Anne. Lurkers comment.
Comments (113)This is the house I just sold. (crying, lol). 1880's, but a stick Victorian not a Queen Anne. 10X10 main kitchen, with a regular pantry (all shelving from PO) and a butler's pantry/water pantry that housed the sink and dishwasher, as well as a few original/early 20th cabinets with glass door uppers and bead board lowers. Clearly built in place and not to standard depths or heights. The main kitchen had one, 1970's, 12" floor cabinet, a broken range and an old side by side fridge. Happily it also had original white beadboard, 10' ceiling and a heavy plate rail around the top. It also had (challenge) 7 doorways and 2 windows. In a 10X10 space. We wanted a functional kitchen that played up the nice architectural details of the room and had a bit of an unfitted feel (had to due to all the doors, there was no space for a "run" of any kind) but were very much on a budget and looking for materials that were simple, easy to clean and could be replaced without tears if we decided to make changes in 5-10 years. Changed the pulls on those cabinets to these: the uppers had proper and nearly matching latches so those stayed. In the main kitchen, we put IKEA Adel White cabinets, with glass door uppers, and IKEA butcherblock countertops (later replaced by a dark green granite). Light fixture: Restoration Hardware Schoolhouse with vintage fans ceiling fan fixture (no longer made). Range, micro/hood, and dishwasher: Bosch smooth white. D/F range with warming drawer for busy working family with kids and crazy schedules. Fridge, Jenn Air French Door floating glass white. Walls Benjamin Moore Popcorn Kernel: (ooh I found an old GW pic of MY kitchen!) Backsplash: If I could do that kitchen over, I'd have done granite/stone counters sooner (we did it just to sell), and I'd have done the backsplash sooner. But the rest, I was really happy with!...See MoreWeatherGard vs Wallside? Recommondations for windows in Ann Arbor, MI?
Comments (4)Based on price, I don't think they are mediocre. In this area, both are rated in top ten. (I don't buy windows often and so it could just be sticker shock. It does look like pricing is aligned with Anderson windows.) In Michigan, we do get some really high and real low temps so maybe we need a higher quality. I don't mind paying the money if it's for something that is needed. I just can't figure out what we really need in a window. https://weathergard.com/ will show some of the details of the windows including their frame construction which to my limited knowledge seems to look more sturdy and makes sense. But $7000 worth of sense, I'm not sure. Glass package is Cardinal LoE-366 https://www.cardinalcorp.com/products/coated-glass/loe-366/ Windows are mix of sliders and casement. The tracks in the sliders are removable for cleaning (which I thought was genius!) They also offer life long warranty on the vinyl, glass seal, balancer, hardware, labor and screen repair....See Morebac717
