Are wall cabinets sturdy enough to be used a base?

Everything I'm reading say wall cabinets can be turned into a base cabinet with some adjustments on the height. However I like the height as I want to use two wall cabinets as the base for a long desk to create a fake built in desk feel. Additionally the space only allows for something as deep as 18 inches so again wall cabinets would be awesome!

Are they strong enough to hold be the base of a long desk? This is the vibe I'm shooting for! I was looking to use Ikea products as the base but most of the drawer units that would have worked are sold out in my area. So next was wall cabinets from Ikea or Lowes. I plan on doing some DIY to try and complete the look but I was hoping to by as many premade/ just need to assemble items as possible. I'm a bit DIY'ed out!

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated it!

My husband made a built-in bookshelf that looked like one half of your desk picture (wall cabinets on the bottom with shelving up above). It was very solid. The construction of the wall cabinets should be the same as a base cabinet with just a sizing difference. It should work!

We have a bridge cabinet (the one meant to go over a fridge or similar) from Wood-Mode that is on the floor as a window seat. It works great.

This is an old thread but I'm currently dealing with the "shaving" issue. I'm replacing a tub-shower combo with a Swanstone shower, and was thinking that putting in the seat would make the shower too cramped. So my Swanstone guy suggested this recessed accessory shelf as an alternative. I think this could work instead of a shelf or seat. Any opinions? You just have to saw off the tab from the leg connecting piece, since the shallow cabinets don't have the little indentation on the bottom. Ikea does sell what they call shallow base cabinets, which are just the wall cabinet + a set of legs. If you go to ikeahacker.com or ikeafans.com you can see many examples of how people have done this. Some have also used the mounting rail instead of legs for a floating effect.

Yes, just be sure to have good support. -- I use 2 base cabinets (cut to right height) stacked to create my deep appliance garage, but they're sitting on the countertop. We did use the 36"x18" over-the-fridge cabinet over the fridge because it was the right height, but we put in super duper support to bring it out to 30" deep, instead of 24" deep, to be flushed w/ the wall of cabinets. @suezbell: No countertops along that one wall (that's a window to the outside, not a pass through) as it will become a breakfast nook... so there will be a table facing the long built-in bench, and two chairs opposite... leaving space for the fridge to open. Tested the veggie drawers etc in the store, looks like it will behave like the old fridge and come out. Great point about the bathroom vanity... So I measured my largest pans as well as other appliances like the instant pot, deep fryer, etc (as the new unit will also need to store these) and after reading all your feedback I'm thinking I should do 18" cabinets opposite the stove. This allows for a 45" aisle. At the moment, my regular pots and pans fit into two 21" (inner depth) x 30" (outer length) drawers. So I'm hoping they might all fit if I turn the entire bottom section of the new unit into storage for pots/ pans/ appliances. Something like 3 sections (24"/ 30"/ 24") of double pots and pans drawers.

What are the dimensions of the desk part you're planning? I temporarily used the IKEA LINNMON / ADILS whose table top was tight at 39-3/8"x23-5/8". There's no way I'd want an 18" deep desk, particularly if I had a computer.

Just use the wall hanging system from Ikea and use the wall cabinets no problem I do agree 18" is pretty shallow if you have even alaptop you notice in yoour inspo pic there is no laptop or computer

When redoing our kitchen after a water leak damaged the old lower cabinets, we repurposed four former tall upper cabinets into base cabinets for the pantry by building a toe-kick frame to support them. We put a simple counter on them and then hung shorter uppers for less-used items. Very useful. Several other former tall uppers were installed in the garage.
The kitchen got all new cabinetry.
