A ceramic corner shelf *should* be sturdy enough though I wouldn't recommend it. Instead, see if your installer can't get their hands on a chunk of 3cm stone (slab fabricators often have scraps) and make your corner shelf from that. It's a much nicer look and will be more sturdy than the hollow ceramic shelf.

You know, if it's only 3x4, maybe you might wnant to consider a folding bench like the teak ones that are posted on here from time to time? Up when you need it, flush to the wall when you don't...? I kind of wish we'd done that instead of the second-largest better bench--it's *just* big enough for me and DH, but if anyone who's bigger-girthed tried to use it, it would be too small, and the largest one just is *too* large for our space.

Google folding teak shower bench and you should find it. Various folks have various ones here--some fold up, some down, etc.

Fly-- funny you should say that-- I just started putting together the pan for shower today that's 3 1/2 feet square, and it's going to get the very same corner bench shown in that picture, and standing in that shower, it still doesn't feel cramped at all.

Do you need to be seated for leg shaving? How about just installing a shaving perch?

That's basically what the smaller better benches are. Believe me-- even for the most petite woman, they'd be hard pressed to get more than one cheek on one of those things!! LMAO

What size is that bench in the photo? Looks very tiny and could work. Is it 12 inch? And no, i don't need to sit at all; in fact, i would never sit. just need something! I will check "shaving perch" too!. thanks (do I take it then that all of you think a corner shelf would not be sturdy enough, even if i am not *large*?

It's 17" point to point, and 12" out from the corner in both directions.

This is an old thread but I'm currently dealing with the "shaving" issue. I'm replacing a tub-shower combo with a Swanstone shower, and was thinking that putting in the seat would make the shower too cramped. So my Swanstone guy suggested this recessed accessory shelf as an alternative. I think this could work instead of a shelf or seat. Any opinions?

I think it would be fine as long as the bottom of it were structurally supported by your framing behind and that it's not just "floating" in a stud bay.

One of the installers over at John Bridge's did exactly that with one of the small Inovis "Recessit" niches. He set it in the wall at about 18" from the floor so his wife could use it to shave with. I thought it was Shaughnn (from earlier in this thread) but he said it wasn't him, so I'm not sure WHO it was.

Hmm...I don't think that was me, but I did post one on John's site using just a small soap 'corner caddy.' The folks seem to like it though....

Hey Laz-- no, it wasn't you. It was a 4x6 niche, mounted at about 18" off the floor.

My bathing shower is only 54"x34". Would the smaller better bench work well here or is it still too big?
