Decorating a small formal dining room
Comments (2)Welcome to the forum! I think you'll enjoy the people here; they're so talented and have so many good ideas. I'm a relative newcomer myself. For some reason the first thing that came to my mind was Audubon prints. I can really visualize them in your setting. Other ideas would be botanical prints, or prints of American primitive art, especially those that feature children, cats and dogs. I frankly can't envision any room without art and this will add character to your space without bulkiness. Early American furniture also looks marvelous with Oriental rugs, traditionally those with red or dark blue backgrounds. Try to go for a large enough rug so that the chairs will still be on them when they're pulled back. Photographs of your space would be a big help. I'm especially curious about your wall color and window treatments....See MoreHelp with decorating my small open concept dining room
Comments (47)Here is my first thought... Think about the floral chairs. You mentioned that you use tablecloths quite a bit. The floral pattern may limit using a pattered tablecloth - unless it's a stripe fabric. Something to consider... But I do like the chairs. I'm not crazy about using all upholstery, as in your second photo. Did you not like the silver tub chair from World Market? The only reason why I say this is because of the white chairs and white cabinet. If one is a brighter white, it may not look right. The metal is more like a neutral. Also - it looks like you have more red accents in your kitchen - the solid upholstered chair is more rust. Here is another patterned chair with more red tones: Also - when your guy makes the table, make sure he gives you enough overhang on each end (short ends) so you can get two chairs there if you want. As it appears now, you would be limited to one chair, sitting between the legs. Comments (2)Do you own or is this a rental? The pix look a little stretched like realty ones. Since there is a rad between the doors, forget putting TV there. I'd keep the dining close to the kitchen and put the sitting/TV area to focus on the long wall. Start with the fun project of finding a knockout chandelier to hang from that pretty ceiling. Is there a fridge under the microwave? I see only one wall outlet behind the door and one above the counter, so you'll have to use extension cords and cord covers along the baseboards to have enough lighting here. Consider floating your sofa facing the long wall and TV. Then use a drop leaf table behind it for dining. You'll be able to open it all the way for entertaining. Anchor your seating area with a rug 2-3 feet wider than your sofa....See Morejoann500
