Are these chairs too rustic/distressed for my Yellow Kitchen?
Comments (117)You must have heard me wondering this morning what you had decided! I like it. They look great! I agree about the fabric, it blends well with the other upholstery. But, when it gets worn, the yellow will look good too -- make sure you buy enough to do the job (and make repairs to the banquette if needed) now while it is still available....See Morehickory non-rustic
Comments (5)Hickory can make a beautiful kitchen. However, KM hickory is a bit more rustic than you actually sound like you want. You should find a maker who uses something like select hickory or pecan. The two are completely interchangeable grainwise. Try Dynasty for that. Quartersawn oak is also beautiful, but if you plan on going dark, you lose the grain that makes it so special. Keep it medium to light if you choose it, or you're wasting money on the upgrade and might as well choose plainsawn oak. The other thing is that laminate is NOT wood. It's plastic over a paper picture of wood on MDF. The MDF is the only wood product in it. Once it scratches, it's ruined and cannot be repaired. It's also not the best choice for a kitchen unless you do a glue together installation to keep the moisture out of the seams. You can usually buy a medium grade wood for the same amount that a higher grade laminate will cost you, and at least with real wood, it can be refinished if it becomes damaged. Slate would also be a good choice but be careful of the source. Box store slate can have as high as a 50% cull rate so it actually ends up costing as much as a more premium slate from another better quality flooring supplier....See MoreHelp with Hickory Cabinets for Cabin
Comments (13)I have the kraftmaid hickory beadboard for the desk area in the new house. I really love it. My only complaint is that the drawer fronts are slab, not 5 peice, which would give it a much more old fashioned feel in keeping with the beadboard. The drawer hardware is blum tandem, which is great, but the doors aren't soft close-- that's OK: it's an easy DIY. My kraftmaid order through HD arrived on time [6 week wait] and all the bits and pieces were as ordered. The hickory cabs are fine, but there is some damage to the finish on a couple of the other units, esp. the cherry [softer wood]. I wouldn't go with Kraftmaid for a whole kitchen. I perfer frameless [more space] kraftmaid is full frame, I like cabs that sit on legs [easier to tweak the plumbing and electric]; kraftmaid has an integral toekick. Of course, Kraftmaid isn't the only maker of hickory cabs. If your concerns are like mine, you may want to keep shopping. And the Kraftmaid hickory isn't especially rustic: there are companies out there that leave a lot more knotholes etc. if you like that sort of thing. But if you don't mind [or even prefer] framed, the hickory bead board really is very, very lovely. And because hickory is so hard [harder than maple, much harder than oak] that I expect it will wear very well-- I've had hickory for about 6 years in my current kitchen, and it is literally like new. The tandem glides are amazing-- I can't get over how easy it is to take the doors in and out....See MoreNeed help to pull off "Lodge" look with Shiloh Polar White Cabinets?
Comments (67)Oh shoot - I am so sorry! We finally had some decent weather so I have been outside as much as possible and yesterday was so busy at work! Sometimes that's just what it takes - enough photos for your to confirm your heart and minds eye or give warning that maybe it's not what you want in the scheme of things after all. It is going to look sharp! We have similar schemes going on. ;) Our master is the maple sable with black glaze-you have selected a nice door choice it will pick up the glaze more. I nod to the polar white - yes I do. It looked so stark in the showroom that I didn't even bring it home (slap the forehead how dumb was that-I totally knew all about the lighting differences in spaces and how they change things, so dumb?)! Ha! It's all good, I don't dislike the soft cabinets really - just the trim. ;) I went with silas on the island because I didn't want to clash or matchy match the floor we had already selected (medium hickory) so in essence did the same as you but opposite. For posterity: Island - Hickory Silas stain with black glaze. See above comment - in the show room polar looked really white and I knew we'd likely have leathered black granite on top of them - I was worried it would look like a black/white 'period' kitchen although that's fine the house isn't period and it wasn't what I was going for. Here are my soft white with the granite:...See MoreRelated Professionals
