Comments (10)Round and round on what to do...very familiar ground for most of us here! About your layout above... I get that you want: More counterspace (and, I assume, placed where it will actually be useful for prepping) Keep some form of FR in the existing space - is that b/c of the fireplace? Keep the formal DR as-is b/c you don't want to knock down the load-bearing wall b/w the kitchen & DR Keep the formal LR as-is since you don't want to knock down the load-bearing wall b/w the kitchen/FR & LR Have table seating in the kitchen itself -- or -- Have peninsula seating But... You have very limited space to fit all that in - that's why you currently don't have a lot of counterspace. So, if you aren't willing to add more space (by adding onto the house or by merging existing spaces), it's going to be difficult to "have it all" The peninsula, as drawn, will not comfortably seat 5 people and seating inside the "U" puts people in the middle of the work space. That seat on the end is also in the aisle of what you have said is a busy path. So, are you willing to consider doing a few things such as: Move/change windows? Open a doorway in the LR wall to lead into the LR - not so wide that you have to do expensive load-bearing posts, etc., but wide enough for a doorway? Move the Powder Room to add that space to the kitchen? Move the closet? Eliminate the FR as a "FR" and merge it into the kitchen to add yet more space? Here's a layout that might work if you're willing to make the changes I asked about above. (Note: Your floor plan is missing key elements like the windows on the top wall in the kitchen and the measurements in the other rooms since they are not all the same size...I think I've got them.) General... The Powder Room and Closet have been relocated to off the Foyer. They do take about 6" off the FR/LR, but I don't think it's an issue(YMMV) The former PR + Kitchen have been merged into a larger kitchen The FR has been converted into a dining area that's completely open to the kitchen - much more comfortable seating for everyone for meals, visiting, etc. With it open to the kitchen, guests can easily sit there and enjoy your company + fireplace + comfortable seating. A 5' wide doorway has been opened b/w the former FR/now table space and the formal LR The formal LR has been converted into a Family/Living Room. You might consider a future fireplace (gas or wood-burning) in that room as well...if you're into fireplaces (I am, so if you are, I can relate!) The formal DR can remain as-is or it could be converted to a Library/Computer Room with a comfy chair or two that would be a quiet respite from the hectic day-to-day activities! Put a door at both entrances (Kitchen & Foyer) to close it off when needed - for either quiet or to keep casual traffic out of it to help keep it tidy. ......See Moreinterior drawer dimensions--do these make sense?
Comments (1)I don't have any 4-drawer banks, but the 2 bottom drawers on my 3-drawer banks are the same depth. I haven't wished that they were otherwise. Have you measured everything you have that you might wish to store? The only problem I ran up against in the beginning was that my food processor was 1/4" taller than any drawer I had...But it died and my new one fits. Anyway, that would be the only reason to make any deeper than the 10 1/4"...if you want to store something that's taller. I think if you get the bottom drawers too deep and make others shallower, that you might end up stacking too much in the deeper one. It's all just my opinion and experience, so I hope it helps....See MoreReality check- does this timeline make sense?
Comments (34)Hi Kristin - any update? Are your cabinets being installed today? Any new pictures? If you are on time for eating in your new kitchen by 8/3, you are ahead of me now! I'm jealous. My contractor's floor guy completely blew him off, and we wasted 1.5 weeks waiting for the floors to be done (well, electrical got done in there, but not much else). In addition, it turns out that the door that we though got ordered on June 8 hadn't been ordered, so it got ordered on ~July 10, so I have at least a 4 week wait for that. :-( We just had our first coat (sealer/urethane) put down on the floors on Friday. We could walk on it when we got home, and there was a slight smell, but I wouldn't call it strong at all, and it was gone before we went to bed. Both the contractor and the floor guy have been all over the place on how it will go this week - the only sure thing I know is that he will buff today and put 2nd coat on. We plan to not stay in the house until Thursday night, assuming that he won't be able to do 3rd and final coat until Wednesday (this morning he mentioned doing the 3rd coat tomorrow, but given that it's so humid here, I'd be surprised if it dries enough for them to buff again). I really, really wish that they had planned to do the floors when we were on vacation. I know that it's not the usual approach because you don't want the traffic on them, but I would have taken that risk just to have them done so that all the things that are dependent on them (appliances, toe kick, etc.) could be finished. Oh well, hind sight is 20/20. Lynne...See Morechispa
