Classic MCM houses do not have shutters. Your house doesn't exactly fit the MCM profile, but with your modern garage and entry door, I agree: don't do shutters.

Shutters never belong on MCM style . IMO a colored door works well if the door is not exactly yhe same as the garage door .Then go to work doing MCM landscaping . Google has some awesome pics that wou;d work with your lot and house . As for siding color with that wood in the garage door I would do charcoal or almost black The windows will need to be the same dark color too IMO We just painted our MCM ranch sidng Racoon Fur BM I love it.. We have a 1950s ranch with the stucco with the bits of glass and in that stucco were black bits .

Never actually looking into MCM landscaping. I will do so! I agree Patricia about going dark, but the windows are fairly new and vinyl. Painting them is not an option. The white will, however, be dramatically less when all the window trim is not painted white.

I certainly am on board with no shutters on the right side of the house, I was just thinking that the front part with the double window may look bare.

Oh, and what you don't see on the right side of the house, it a few feet of brick below the wood siding. Should I paint that brink once exposed by removing the shrubs?

So I think you should go dark on your siding and white on all the trim. Love your new front and garage doors.

You could cut the yews along the left side of the house down in half. They will not look good for a while, but they do recover well. Then they will be the right height. Lots on cutting into the bushes with a hand pruner will open them up. On the right side of the house, I think most of those bushes should go. Instead, plant some flowering bushes. I think the rest of your landscaping looks good.

Thank you houssaon and nj! That visual is helpful. I have started doing some research on the landscape with a couple big rusted squared planters and plants, and the whatnot. Definitely how the plants can make a huge difference. That photo was definitely helpful. I think I want to go even darker with the paint!

i love the dark paint for your house. Your new wood stained door and garage door will look great! I see what you were thinking with the horizontal wood slat shutters…trying to get more of the cedar wood on the front of the house, but the shutter police nixed that idea! (I kinda liked it.) Maybe you can add wood accents in another way, like in the peak of the gable, in the interior of your porch area, or on a low wall. Also, looks like maybe you are due for a new roof? Keep us posted!

We were just talking about doing the gable peak stained wood, Mick! And with new landscaping, we'll do some some horizontal wood features in the landscape. Last we checked, the roof is actually in good shape, just needs a good cleaning. Nice thing is, if we feel like it needs shutters, we can always add them later. Thank you!

If what you're doing is painting existing siding, consider using a darker siding color but keep the white fascia and window trim. A MCM garage door and MCM trim around the front entry door -- perhaps also used as gates -- driveway/patio gates -- could be a great look with darker siding.

You might consider a medium / dark gray with the MCM wood look.

One way to add the wood boards -- horizontal or vertical -- that you like that give you an MCM vibe -- without replacing a lot of the existing siding of your home -- is to add horizontal boards as swinging doors that are gates, either to the driveway and/or to a patio, particularly a front yard patio.

Beautiful front yard beyond the shrubs alongside the house. Don't clutter it with "stuff" unnecessarily. If you want a path to the road, build it alongside the driveway to the mailbox rather than cut through the front lawn.

Would remove (and, if possible, move it to another location) that shrub that extends beyond the front right corner of that left wing of the house -- that shrub is in front of the front door.

Do some checking on the appropriate way and time of year to trim the shrubs you have and consider trimming them for a level look and all underneath window sill height. Would remove/move all the shrubs that are directly in front of the front entry door and the exterior wall beside it between the front entry door and the window to the right of it -- perhaps even in front of the three windows to the right of the door if you are interested in creating a front yard patio.

Since you don't have a front porch on which to sit, consider creating a short landscaping wall from the front of the house toward the road in order to create a small level patio to the right of the sidewalk that enters the house. The retaining wall should be to the right of the existing front sidewalk -- a level step or two to the right of it -- and be one comfortable step down from the sidewalk level.

A small level area created in front of the three windows immediately to the right of the front door could make a great place for a front yard patio (maybe about 16'x16') immediately beside the house/front door and, aside from a walk path to the you can create a MCM and green privacy screen fully around the right and front side of the patio. Aside from an opening for a walk path, you could also add a privacy screen between sidewalk and patio -- (?perhaps made / as and with the MCM look horizontal board feature you want to add?).

if you the two (or more) shutters pictured, you can hang them on horizontal boards between posts to use them as a privacy screen for that front of that patio directly across from the front sidewalk as it approaches the house -- and/or you could even have the two shutters double as eye level privacy wall by hanging them as a pair of "saloon" swinging doors on posts of the ground level set between the sections of green privacy hedge -- doors thru which you enter your front yard patio.

You could reuse your existing shutters, perhaps repainted black or your new house color, as the wall between your house and the gate to your patio.

You can reuse any shrubs you removed, moving them to create the front and right side privacy screen.

Thank you, Sue! That first link is actually a house we have been using for inspiration! Yeah, we are definitely going to do some wood slats and some former fashion in the landscape.

Shutters look nice on a lot of houses. But, since you are going for an mcm vibe, I would leave them off for now. I like the idea of a very dark gray, and yes, I would do the window trim the same color, just leave the windows white. Beautiful door and garage door. I do agree with the others, that you need to do a different type of landscaping. Try to keep some of your existing, to put in other areas of the yard. Be careful when you pick the gray. Some lean a bit blue, or green, or even purple.
