Stained concrete

Has anyone done this before? I'm thinking of doing this to the front porch and walkway and the back concrete pad that was the hot tub pad and is now a place for my garden planters. Both are looking pretty ugly these days. I looked up Behr and they have some that have sand in them to prevent slipping. I'm thinking of using one of the gray ones for the front. The back pad I'm thinking of stenciling with some kind pattern, just haven't decided what.

I would try cleaning it with a pressure washer or oxalic acid before even thinking about staining it.

A neighbor stained her driveway a couple of years ago. Two winters & the drive is a mess.

I stained the unsealed concrete driveway and walkway at my last house. I wouldn't recommend it for the driveway if you live in a snowy climate. After the first winter of road salt being dragged on by the cars it removed some of the stain and the driveway was all blotchy . I reapplied it the next summer, but it did the same thing. I don't remember the brand, but it wasn't cheap. Now I heard acid staining works good, but you have to be careful applying it.

We poured a 213' long driveway using colored concrete mixed into the concrete when wet. One of the guys we hired to help with the pours dumped a Mountain Dew soda on the wet colored concrete....TWICE! Bicarbonate apparently leaches the color out of colored concrete. I had to stain it topically after it dried to cover up the BIG, 3' x 3' stains. Then I've since colored existing grey concrete with topical stain. I've never tried stenciling. The process I use is too wet, runny to keep a sharp edge and hold a design. Bayer is the brand I used(purchased from a concrete company). I've used Behr(Home Depot) for deck stains and such....never tried their concrete stain.

Help!! We just recently had stained concrete countertops put on our outdoor cabinets on our patio. My husband fried fish last night and got cooking oil on the counter. This morning I saw the oil and tried to wipe it off and it did not come off. Does anyone have an idea of how to clean this grease off? I'm afraid to use other suggestions about getting grease and oil out of concrete because this is "stained" concrete. It was sealed so I don't know why the grease stayed. Thanks!

Usually diluted muriatic acid, 3 or 4 parts water to 1 part acid. Always add acid to water when mixing, rubber gloves, goggles, knee pads, acid washing brush... Wash it down with water loaded with baking soda to neutralize the acid. Pour any leftover mix in the pool and rebalance a couple hours later. Scott

It’s a very common floor style in my area (Texas) and like any flooring, there are pros and cons. The biggest con is having it done by someone(s) who doesn’t know what they’re doing. I’ve taken classes in applying concrete acid stain (floors and counters), as well as had it in my own homes. My preferred brand is still Kemiko. It’s an art to get a beautiful finish. This is a process that can go terribly wrong and be difficult to fix if it does. Especially regarding sealing properly. But if done well, can be beautiful, easy to care for, and last a long time. That’s my best advice — be very, very confident in who will be doing the staining and sealing. And be prepared to live with possible cracking. It’s hard to say more without knowing why you’re considering it, your geographical location, who will be doing it, what kind of stain, the style of your house, etc.

Water-based stained concrete floors?

Hi, We are finishing our lower level in a water-based stain product, and we would appreciate some input from people who have gone this route. One thing we have noticed, is some homes have very dramatic, strong colors/patterns and that is great for them, but we wanted something more subtle, with a more natural aesthetic. A little reminiscent of leather or stone is ok, but not a lot of pattern. The color swatches I've seen from our contractor's recommended brand (H&C, through Sherwin Williams), seem rather strong, for lack of a better word. Is this product the best bet for getting a subtle, natural final finish, or is there another water-based product that delivers better results? Any other tips?

I'm not staining my driveway, it's asphalt. The walkway and pad out back rarely get even walked on.

I stained our back patio in L.A. along with the pad that the hot tub is on because the white concrete was too blinding in the sun, which we have a lot of. You really need to put a very good sealer on top of it - we did not - but it is still just a surface treatment and will wear off and look splotchy after a few years. For us, that is still better than having blinding white concrete.

Better to pour a new layer of concrete with the stain mixed it over the old concrete.

At this point, we want to cover our patio with pavers or some kind of thin tile that would not be slippery. Our garage in Cathedral City has a concrete flood with an epoxy finish on it, and this is much more durable than surface concrete stain.

I stained this "pad", two years ago. (just the part in front of the door. An egress to the herringbone patio) It hasn't changed. I mixed black chalk and concrete color by Bayer together, then painted it on. Then put concrete sealer on the finished product. But I didn't do a design.....
