Building a Home Lighting Design Dilemma

Do you like any of these outdoor lights?

Building a new home, and decision fatigue is setting in...

For the front exterior, we need a hanging light over the front door as well as two small lights over the garage.

I love this hanging light - Alas, I learned it is for indoor use only. Has anyone seen something comparable? I really like the rounded rod on top to mimic the arch over our front door --

Because the siding space over garage is small, a "barn" or "gooseneck" style I think would work well, rather than something that needs to be fully flush on the siding... but don't think a real industrial/barn light would go with the lantern above.. Would any of these below compliment? And should they be black? Or could an antique bronze or oil rubbed bronze work?

I think the styles are too different. I feel confident you can find something better suited that doesn't need to be flush to the house if you absolutely want the hanging light.

See if you can get two recessed lights over the garage. You only needed ONE light......and why detract from your entrance at front door?

And if all of these fancy gadgets are too much for you, and you want something even more basic than Carl's weather sticks, I offer the Deck-centric Weather Forecast. First thing in the morning I look out at my deck.. - Is it wet? It must have rained overnight and the temperature is above freezing. - Are there splashes in the wet? It's still raining. - Is the whole deck wet or just the part not under the overhang? If the whole deck is wet than there's strong winds from the east (or northeast or southeast). If only part, then it's relatively calm or the wind is from the west (or northwest or southwest). North winds are mostly blocked by the house. - Is there snow on the deck that wasn't there yesterday? It snowed overnight and the temperature is at or below freezing. - Is the snow depth increasing? It's snowing. - Are there shadows on the deck? It's sunny. This morning part of the deck was wet but no splashes, and there was a small amount of snow around the edges. A little later I started seeing shadows but on and off. Therefore, it rained overnight but is not raining now, and the temperature is just around freezing. There's little wind and the sky is partly cloudy. And the squirrel conned me into throwing out peanuts again. Well I'm boring...I have fixtures from Pottery Barn. After spending a year with cheap bars that literally fell off the wall when you put a towel on them, we were ready to spend anything for a high quality towel bar and hook. The pottery barn pieces have lovely finishes (I have nickle and oil rubbed bronze...I'm doing three bathrooms) and they are sturdy as all get out. They don't come with cheap little plastic wall anchors, but instead have metal screw in anchors that are very high quality. I also have polished brass fixtures in my powder room which are lovely quality. They're from Restoration Hardware. Similar quality if not better than Pottery Barn (the ceramic soap dish was nicer). I only have the nickle pieces installed so far (we just moved in yesterday). I'll take a couple of pics tomorrow. Maybe I'll be lucky and get the ORB pieces installed in the master LOL

if I don't have green beans from the garden...occasionally I'll throw in a can of mushroom soup...I would dare do that to my freshly canned green beans.... Mary it must be nice to have fresh food at every meal...I wish I had the time or the love of cooking to do that...I guess without people like me...that aisle at the grocery store would be a thing of the past!

There are pluses and minuses. I have slept in '80s brass beds, 1880s brass beds, and a more modern wrought iron bed. Here are some things to think about. - Metal beds originally became popular as a precaution against bedbugs. Bedbugs hide in wood furniture, so if you get an infestation simply replacing the mattress won't suffice. For most of my life, bedbugs were a quaint old affliction remembered only in good-night sayings. However, they are now back in a big way. If you travel at all, your luggage can carry bedbugs from a hotel (even a very nice hotel) right back to your own bed. If so, you may have to treat or replace the mattress but at least your bed will be easy to sanitize. - You need to plan out where your head goes. Banging your skull on metal is unpleasant. That means you need good-sized pillows for sleeping and extra fluffage for reading. And yes, pillows do have a tendency to slip behind the bed. - I found it pleasant to touch the cool metal with my hands when I was warm in bed. It sounds like nothing, but it actually made a difference in comfort . - By all means get a well-made bed if you go metal. Cheap metal beds flex and move and bend even more than cheap wooden ones. A poorly made bed will make you feel like you are sleeping in a lifeboat on open seas.

I like the classic arch top lantern with your house.

OTOH, I can also see a pointy witches hat lantern.

Agree with Jan, can you do recessed lights over the garage?

It's not easy to see shopping online, but most lighting manufacturers make collections of exterior lighting which would include pendant or semi flush ceiling mounted and various wall mounted lights which all coordinate in style and material. Collections can be found online with a little work. Try home improvement stores. Or go to your local lighting store.

Follow dark sky guidelines for outside lighting. "Lighting should
- Only be on when needed
- Only light the area that needs it
- Be no brighter than necessary
- Minimize blue light emissions
- Be fully shielded (pointing downward)"
As they are not fully shielded, the "hanging lights" would not be suitable as they would illuminate the sidewalk, yard, and siding rather than the just entryway -- the place lighting is needed. Bell-shaped fixtures would meet the guidelines over the garage. Path lights would be the proper choice for a future walkway that would lead to the front door.

What do you all think of this for the house? Not sure if you can see in picture, but edging of roof and windows have copper capping..

I like the last two for style but the sides may encourage bird perching which means bird poop on your doorstep. The copper one looks good.

They all have solid bottoms so they illuminate everything except the porch which is what you need to illuminate. And IMO they're too fussy for the house.

Those are all very pretty.

I was just looking for two lights for our new porch. I also thought lanterns and then fell for black striped white schoolhouse lights from Rejuvenation. This is also from Rejuvenation.
