BM Pale Oak walls with what color cabinets for family room

I am renovating the first floor of my home and am looking for some advice for cabinet colors in my family room for our built in wall. The main color paint in my house is Benjamin Moore classic gray with Benjamin more Chantilly lace trim. My kitchen has simply white shaker cabinets and my island is graphite (pretty much looks black). We have a total open concept feel to our home, but the family room has a step down into another room, so we decided to paint this a different color. We are in the process of painting it Benjamin Moore Pale Oak with the same Chantilly lace trim as the rest of the house. We will have a black sliding patio door in this family room that will take up one wall and we just installed black windows. I am thinking of incorporating some color into the built in cabinets, but am not sure which way to go or if I should match this built in/cabinetry to the kitchen cabinets. Looking for any and all advice and suggestions!

Can you post a picture of the built-ins, and their location in the room and relation to the kitchen cabinets? Impossible to give good advice with the info given. Room size, light sources, flooring, etc all play a role in the decision.

The flat and matte will appear the same. Thank you Michael. That's exactly what I needed to know. DH and I had a long discussion about this last night. We did some sample areas throughout the house and have lived with them for a few weeks. He surprised me - he definitely wants to go with white ceilings now. I'm so looking forward to painting with the Matte after what I've read here. I figure that will be my reward after all the prep and priming fun. :-) Unless you can get Muralo Satin Flow. It's nicer. I'll ask my dealer if he has it. I have no issue with upgrading here if it gives better wear and is nicer to apply. Fresh Start acrylic primer is one of the best base coatings on the market. Excellent. I know my dealer stocks it in 5 gallon buckets. Thanks again for all your help!

Pale Oak can look pretty gray when comparing to true pinks and oranges. What color is the trim in the room? If it's a warmer trim color, it could make the Pale Oak look more gray. You could try a beige/off-white, such as BM Wind's Breath.

I have Classic Gray in my entry and hallway. My trim is SW High Reflective White. Classic Gray looks different depending on the time of day and the angle of the light, which I suppose is true of all colors. It is light and neutral. Here are some pictures from different angles and different times of day. Hallway is Classic Gray. Other wall is SW Magnetic Gray.

Will they blend.... Depends on how much light there is and individual eyeballs. My guess is some people may not realize they are two different colors. Probably will be more noticeable in some areas, not so much in others. Because RP and PO aren't dramatically different. Same hue family. Difference is in Value (lightness) and Chroma (how neutral or colorful).

This is still under total construction so not the best pictures. Built ins will be in about 2 weeks but want to order cabinets that will go with the pale oak walls. I attached a picture of the flooring here and the kitchen cabinets (white) and island (black). The patio door is a Marvin black door with 2 sliders and will be arriving the end of this week to be installed. I can build on this thread as more is installed. This room will have a lot of light though with the 4 paneled sliding glass door on one side and there are 3 windows on the left side. The built in wall will be on that far empty wall and would like it to take up the whole wall, possibly incorporate white shiplap as well. Not the best pictures here as it is a night view and not all bulbs installed in ceiling. Will take day time pictures tomorrow. There will be 6 LED hi hats in this room as well

I'd paint the builtins the same chantilly lace that you have on your trim. Depending on the builtin design, you could paint the backs of the cabinets in a deeper color later on, but I'd keep it neutral for now until everything is done and your furniture is in.
