Nichiha Vs. Hardie shake and lap siding
Comments (19)our nichiha has been up for a while now and we still have people knock at the door to ask what color we painted our siding. they seem shocked when i tell them it's cement. we're six miles inland in central new jersey and have just come through hurricane sandy with absolutely no damage to the siding. it's unfortunate most of the trees and telephone poles didn't hold up as well. in the meantime, as i drive down our street not everyone was as fortunate. i noticed a newly sided house had to have some repair work done on their hardiboard. ;-) without question, nichiha is superior to hardi. we have a factory finish in weathered gray. love it....See MoreHardie plank vs cedar shingles
Comments (8)If you want to do cedar siding, I'd highly recommend installing a rainscreen behind it. This allows it to dry out from the backside and helps it hold paint and resist rot much better than siding applied directly up against the tyvek and sheathing. Several companies make premade rainscreens (Benjamin Obdyke's Homeslicker is one of them) but it's also simple to do one yourself with furring strips. The trick is to make sure the flashing and trim are done correctly to accomodate the depth of the rainscreen - the benjamin obdyke website has good diagrams to show you how it should be done....See MoreMetal siding vs. Hardie board and batten? Pros/cons?
Comments (2)I have Hardie Board on my 7 year old house and it's in good shape. But honestly, my next house will have vinyl. The Hardie dents, scratches and crumbles when water logged. If you take a piece off to fix something you probably have to replace it with a new piece - which will not match. None of those things are problems with vinyl. I think that using a pressure washer would be out of the question. Not only would you drive water into the seams but you stand a good chance of taking the finish off the Hardie. Good luck....See MoreVertical 1x6 Accoya Siding vs Hardie B&B Siding Cost
Comments (5)So the Accoya would eat up $190K of your $230k total framing budget? The materials cost for Accoya is in the right ballpark, but the installation cost seems rather high. The $3.4/sqft for installed Hardie seems low. I'm a fan of Hardie as it was installed on my house when it was built in 2001 and still looks pristine. Something does appear off with those comparative numbers. Time to sit down with the contractor and: 1) make sure there are no mistakes in the calculations, 2) make sure you are on the same page in interpreting the numbers, and 3) if nothing changes, get an explanation of why the cost to install Accoya is so high compared to the Hardie material....See MoreKim H
