Tile - how big is too big?

Would love thoughts on selecting tile for primary bathroom. The tile is fairly subtle and comes in two sizes - a 12x24 or larger 24x48 slab. I could do larger on floor and smaller in shower walls, or all small on floor and shower walls. Would do very thin grout lines.

Here are some pics of the bathroom with the two tiles taped out to show spatially. Is the large *too* large? There would be perhaps be four full slabs across longest part of room. Would both be suitable and look ok, just different looks?

I prefer the big. Less grout lines too.

I think the large format is fine. I have a smaller bathroom than yours and it turned out great.

Is it a turkey fig? My comments are about those... You could absolutely use the smaller branches as other cuttings. Heck I'd take more than 1 branch since propagating is not guaranteed with any one piece. If you end up with more than you need, give them away or put them at the curb, somebody will want them. Totally agree with Brandon, the bigger cuttings I've tried for fig, the better and faster they grow. The smallest ones rotted, and no luck with just water. A few days in water until you're ready to pot doesn't seem to harm anything. In addition to removing the figs, remove some leaves if it starts to wilt, more shade. Cuttings can't really utilize much sunshine until they grow some roots. Yes, Ken, figs make medium-size trees here, about 15-20 feet tall, apparently infinitely wide. Tell me what you think of how I shaped my Mom's tree below. You can't tell from the pic, but at the time the pic was taken, I had it where you could duck under and stand up everywhere inside the canopy. The kids like to hide & play in there. Unfortunately it's about twice as big (mostly wider) now, many branches are laying on the ground. After we pick the figs later this month, it's getting another heavy pruning.

From what I've seen (never done it myself), you should be able to root larger cuttings (truncheons) of this plant as easily, or maybe more-so, as smaller cuttings. If there is significant new growth at the tips, you may have to prune back to firmer wood. A moisture tent and rooting hormone should improve your odds.

Thank you Loribee, boxerpups, deedee, and Computermom for the compliments on the room. I don't like to post pictures of my rooms because we have dark woodwork, and that's kind of anathema here. (I love that word, and don't often get to use it!) And deedee, I did have some berries wrapped around the candles in my lanterns and liked them. I'm going to try that too. Igloochic: I've had books there, and didn't like dusting them from the amount of dirt dragged in by my two aussies. But I have a couple downstairs I'm going to hunt up to see how they look. I spent the afternoon shopping my house, and tried a bunch of different things I had. I'm kind of like a magpie; I like shiny things with glass and pottery. I'm missing the texture thing. But, thanks, allison, for your idea about the natural. The funeral thread reminded me I had a lovely piece of driftwood in a pot from my FIL's funderal 24 years ago. Love the large tiles - we are doing many more of them. Make sure the floor is perfection before laying those. You may also want to have 2 -3 pieces extra to keep - JIC. I do also think it would be great with the 12 x 24 on the floor and the large on the walls.

Large would look great. Just realize that they are tougher to install without lippage, so make sure your floor is absolutely level and your installer is absolutely skilled in large tile laying,

The advantage of large tile is fewer grout lines. But, if you tiler is smart he/she will use a urethane grout that does not get grungy and harbor mold. It also does not need to be re-sealed every few years -- something no one ever actually does, Grout lines make little difference these days since the invention of urethane grout.

The disadvantage is that you need a nearly perfectly flat floor that has virtually no deflection. This usually means joists that are closer together (12" o/c is best) and a very stiff sub-floor. If the floor was not heavied-up during its construction to accept the larger tile, I would suggest the smaller format. You will have fewer problems in the future.

Whichever tile you choose, make sure your tiler installs a waterproof membrane under the tile and up the walls at least 3" so water cannot reach the MDF sub-floor. Even MDF rated for wet areas will not stand continued wetting for long. If the MDF buckles, you will probably have to re--do the floor.

I think the decision should be based on the skill of the tile installer you have hired and how good your GC was at producing a strong and level surface that will accept larger tile.

This is what I was thinking, although StarCraft Custom Builders has the bona fides to back up the statement and I'm just a homeowner. Tiles can crack if the floor isn't perfectly flat, and the bigger the tile, the bigger the risk (or the more demanding the prep). Walls are more forgiving because wall tiles aren't subjected to hundreds of pounds of force.
