I would definitely cover the transom (the window above the door). You don't have a lot of wall space. If you go with curtains, I wouldn't take the rod the whole way to the ceiling (you will need a few inches of clearance for the drapes to easily open and close). Thanks everyone! I did consider both slider plantation shutters and replacing with French doors. With the slider, I was worried in our small space it would be too shutter heavy. I don’t love the sliding door, and French doors would look so much better - we are just contemplating how much money we want to invest in a place that isn’t our forever home. We have already replaced all the flooring and countertops, and repainted the entire home top to bottom. The shutters will be another big chunk of change, but the vertical blinds and old wood blinds have to go! :)

Why do you have windows between rooms? That seems odd to me, although I had that in the house where I grew up that was built by my great grandfather (and grandfather), and they had lot of weird ideas. My mother put curtains on both sides of the windows before she converted them to built-in shelves. I would change the sliding doors to French doors and perhaps just have blinds on the windows. What do the windows look like from the other side? Whatever you put on the windows needs to look good from both sides. Personally, I would remove the glass from the windows and just have them as openings. I have this in my living room to my dining room, and I put corbels in the corners of the openings. What kind of privacy do you need between the two rooms?

Hello, I have an 8ft sliding door that has a nice garden view I don’t want to obstruct so I have not had any window treatment. After a year living here, I realize I need some curtains to block out light for hot days. It’s a very open floor plan and one large room so I want to use the same curtains and rod that are on an adjacent window. My problem is that the sliding glass door practically butts up to the fireplace mantle and stone, so there isn’t anywhere for the curtains to gather beyond the door. They will cover the handle. The curtains are grommet style and don’t stack too thickly, so I can handle one panel (unfortunately only come in 50”) there is ample room on the other side of the door to stack two panels. My question is, would it be weird to have three panels for the one door. Because of the center support on the rod, I can’t push them all to one side. It will be asymmetrical when opened. I’m not sure if anyone has any recs or helpful ideas, I couldn’t find anything online. I’m new here, so thank you in advance for reading this long post!
