Wide Living Room Dilemma

Not sure how to set the furniture up in this room. It's a wide living room and with small children, we don't feel comfortable pushing the sofa up against the bannister wall. We are thinking of keeping the tv outside of this room, but if there's a way to make it work, i'm open to that as well. Thanks for any suggestions.

Can you attach a picture that shows more of the room? Specifically, what does it look like beyond the right of the picture? Is that a wall or an entrance to another room?

Can you drywall it to the ceiling there (where the bannister is)?

I think the space would open up if you removed the wainscot. It is creating a "box" that stops the eye and says, "That's all, folks!" I agree with Suki Kabuki that the ladder shelves must go. They always remind me of college decor, along with milk crate shelves. Consider putting the TV on the wall where the ladder shelves are, floating the sofa facing it and moving the dining table near the window where you now have the TV area. I think you should eliminate one of rugs and only use one at the sofa. The two side tables by the TV are cluttering, but you might use the taller one by a sofa arm if it arrives within and inch of it, up or down. Get yourself sorted out with these issues and post new photos. We can go from there.

think & kudz: I was attempting to give the owners the maximum view and balcony access by making the middle bedroom the master, leaving the larger master (which is quite far from the bath) to contain guest, office and media room furnishings with no balcony and possibly a less exciting view. Not sure which view sees the ESB, but assume it is the balcony area since the OP is focused on that. With the bed placed on the "west" wall of the room, the view may be enjoyed from there and chairs can be added near the opening and/or on the balcony in good weather. Perhaps the smaller closet in the room could be converted to a coffee/wine bar, turning the space into a self-contained a.m.or p.m. retreat. A door on the "north" end of the "east wall" could give easy access to the office. The main issue for me is the distance anyone has to go to reach a bathroom. If the foyer closet and LC could be moved forward that bath would at least feel more spacious and the shower enclosure could be larger. I also wonder if that front foyer WIC would be better if incorporated into a larger, more luxe master bath.

I understand why you wanted to have the bistro table/chairs on the window wall between the patio door and the kitchen passageway….it makes sense to have your dining area adjacent to the kitchen. The open wall at the opposite end is the perfect location for the tv. So swap the sofa and loveseat and anchor them and the cocktail table on the rug (front legs of sofa/loveseat on the rug), so the loveseat will pull in closer to the fireplace, leaving room behind for the dining area and access to the patio door. The square end table could then be placed in the corner between the sofa/loveseat.

I have never understood why anyone wants to sit facing the fireplace. In both my last home and my current home my sofa was across from the TV and the fireplace was on the wall between the sofa and fireplace. I watch TV. I don't watch the fireplace. I allow the warmth from the fireplace to warm the area where I am sitting. Can you provide the actual room dimensions? It will help us know what can fit where. Google hidden seating for some ideas on how to add seating for occassional guests.

Or you can put the couch by the windows and do a console with tv across

you don't have to push the sofa against the bannister. bring it out a foot or so like this, so it's not right on top of it. you have the room. on the large wall you can do something like this (these are Ikea hack ideas) with or without the tv

and if it still bothers you, bring in a higher bannister. Something like this w/glass

put the sofa over by the windows and do the console/play cabinets over on the wall.

(or, enclose the bannister area but raise it w/this so you still get light)

another option is to do something longer against the banniset and leave sofa where it is (ignore the TV)

for the window, do some type of built in bench w/storage (doesn't even have to be the size of all three windows. you could do just the middle one if you like)

Put the sofa in front of the windows and an IKEA Besta unit on the solid wall. And a chair facing the sofa. Even pulling the sofa away from the railing might not discourage jumping to it
