Comments (31)joyful, it's an old rail road tunnel, in (under) the Blue Ridge mountains, in Virginia. Near the south end of Shenandoah National Park and the north end of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Built mostly by Irish immigrants, about 1849 to 1858. Some enslaved African Americans also worked on it, but they were too valuable for their owners [distasteful to even say 'owners' but that's how it was] to risk on the most dangerous jobs, so that's why the Irish were brought in. I saw this on the wall of a very small train station somewhere between La Plata, Missouri and Albuquerque, New Mexico when I exited the train to stretch my legs (and use a real bathroom) during a 15 minute stop. I assume posting the plan is a requirement at all Amtrak stations, but this little place (whose name I unfortunately have forgotten) hardly needs one, as you can see. Comments (27)Stromatolites at Hamelin Pool, Shark Bay, Western Australia Stromatolites are basically microbial mats formed by the interaction of microorganisms like cyanobacteria with sedimentary materials, which build up in layers over centuries. They're not very photogenic, are they? But they are incredibly important in the development of the earth as we know it: first, because they represent one of the earliest forms of life on earth, dating back 3.5 billion - yes, billion - years; and second, because they produced oxygen which, over time, increased the atmospheric levels to a point capable of supporting more complex life forms. Furnishing, decorating, finishing.....remodeling....the house we live in. The breakfast bar stools need reupholstered. I'm planning on getting a free leather couch off CL, then using the side & back leather for upholstery fabric....
