Need help with paint colors for 1950s brick ranch house
Comments (2)I love, love, love blonde brick. It has such a lovely golden color. Are you sure you can't work with it instead of painting over it? It has a great midcentury style to it that I find appealing....See More60s ranch exterior paint color; need advice!
Comments (0)My 60’s plain, wood-sided ranch with hip roof, new neutral driftwood shingles, needs new paint color. Spectacular setting NW Michigan, small lake/wetland/creek/meadows/forest, wildlife. I like warm, earth colors. Considering dark chocolate/expresso brown, no contrast trim except white doors could be duck egg blue? Also love warm deep green-blue-greyed, and mossy olive. Windows vinyl clad white slimline, will not paint. Garage door can be painted. New main door beautiful natural fir. Old red deck to be replaced with small stoop/steps/stone pathway to patio. It has been suggested to look at Farrow & Ball pigeon equivalents and a deeper trim. Not visible from road, very rural....See MoreHelp with landscaping 1950’s ranch
Comments (15)Please don't even think of painting the stone. It's part of the 50s vibe that is incredibly popular with young people and is maintenance free. Less is more with this style, so bone up on it so you can appreciate the materials, lines, and design in keeping with its architecture. Sometimes people try to turn their 50s house into farmhouse or some other style. It will mean less work for you to honor its bones inside and out. I have an Ideabook on MCM, so browse through to get a sense of houses built at that time. It is true that not every house built in the 50s is what we think of as MCM, but that style of stonework, wood trim, straight lines, small windows was very popular and has come back in a big way. A small garden center can help you create a couple deep garden beds with a mix of shrubs, grasses, perennials. If you don't want a lot of work, then mulch the beds with yellow/tan stone to echo your stone façade. Put the focus on the left side, along with planting a tree "island" in the lawn. But do have a plan ahead of time for planting. I do hope you'll consider repainting your porch in a color from the stone and getting a dark railing. A bright turquoise door would add a midcentury feeling and opening up the front a bit. Your house is wonderful from the outside anyway. Don't "remuddle" it. Turquoise/teal door yellow stone MCM style. Door makes entrance more prominent....See MoreExterior paint color for 1950’s ranch
Comments (16)Once you decide on your paint color, go to a small garden center and see if you can work with someone there to create front and back yards suitable to your terrain, light conditions, and weather. The less lawn the better in your climate--lots of hardscaping, mulch, and plants that grow well in the desert....See MoreSusan
