Comments (52)This was a great thread and detroitnate did a great job. If it were my house, before I did any planting I would have widened those steps and the walkway. Every picture in the series I focus on those tiny little steps and want to rip them out and redo. I've read that the main walkway leading up to a house should be wide enough for two people to comfortable walk side by side, that rule of thumb seems just about right to me. You want people to be invited into your house with the walkway, not forced into a single file line....See Morelandscaping advice for 1950s ranch
Comments (6)Could you please add photos that show the whole property side to side from the street or sidewalk? Go stand opposite the front door by the curb and take one straight on photo towards the house. Then still standing in the same spot, take one or two photos to each side so that we can see the entire front property from the left boundary to the right in a series of 3-5 photos. That will give us an overview that includes the entire space. Then walk up to a distance of 15’ or so from the house and again take a series of photos so we can see a bit of lawn, but mostly closer views of the walkway, drive, and potential planting areas closer to the house. A few goals for the space would be nice as well. Do you want the front yard or porch as a play area for kids or a seating area for relaxing? Are you just looking for ”curb appeal”? Do you enjoy gardening, or are you looking for easy maintenance? Do you live on a busy road and want some visual separation, or do you want to be able to sit on the front porch and greet neighbors? Etc....See More1950s Brick Ranch - Landscaping Help
Comments (22)Loving the suggestions and brainstorming. The thing that gets me is that concrete slab. I have considered extending the roof and making the concrete slab level to create a covered front porch, but there are some cons with that, one mostly being that the roof isn't even 2 years old yet and I hadn't considered that idea before I had it put on. Another con is that it will limit a lot of light to the bay window. Yet, I'm torn on other options. If I keep the concrete slab, I will either have it tiled or look into stamped concrete. There is a company in a nearby city that refinishes concrete in that manner. I realize though, what nickel_kg said, that unless I remove the concrete between the driveway and the landing or put an additional, curved walkway to the landing, that my home looks a bit unwelcoming. I definitely want to make the correct decisions now rather than spend more money later fixing what I should've done initially. 😣 Obviously I need to have a plan before committing to the beds....See MoreNeed help with exterior of 1950’s brick ranch
Comments (6)Shutters do not get placed on bay windows so I have removed them. That leaves you with only one window for shutters so I have taken them off that window also. If you want the trim white select a white that is not as creamy as your current trim and not as stark as the windows and garage door. You need an updated landscaping plan....See MoreCal
