Beautiful bountiful John Davis
Comments (22)Anika, isn't that the truth?! I don't know, either, what to expect after such a winter as we're having in the midwest. Anyway, John Davis for me, after maybe 8 years or so, is about 4 feet wide by 5 feet tall. I do cut it back pretty low most springs...otherwise I think it would get even bigger. Nearby is The Dark Lady (Austin rose), which has just been limping by year after year, not doing nearly as well...although I have to say, last year, it showed more promise and grew up as well as the wimpy, mostly sideways, strange laying-on-the-ground kind of growth it had been putting out....See MoreJohn Davis and 'Martin Frobisher'
Comments (9)I definitly recommend John Davis as it was one of my best season long bloomers. It can get a little mildew sometimes, but not enough to be of concern to me. I grew Martin Frobisher and found it a good parent for breeding. It does not fit in my catagory of a continuous bloomer, but I cannot give you any numbers. My first choice for a rugosa recommenation is Will Alderman. I have occasionally made the statement that Will Alderman is the standard that I hold my rugosa crosses against. I definitely have not bettered it and the few that I think are just as good are probably not (as parent I am probably biased). Regarding fragrance of each. Sorry, as a retired chemist, my nose is shot....See MoreJohn Davis and Lambert Closse roses
Comments (9)Since people like to describe hybrid teas are hardy to zone 4, you really have to buy repeat blooming roses listed as hardy to zone 3 to get roses that are hardy to zone 5. The rules are different for once bloomers. I've had roses listed as 5b make it through -30 without any problems. It doesn't make sense, but a lot about current rose growing doesn't make sense....See MoreJohn Davis and John Cabot
Comments (43)I have climbing roses that are going on their 4th year and they are scrawny things, halfway up the arbor at best....whereas John Davis stands tall and wide with no support and looks for all the world like a climbing rose...of course it is older than the ones I have on the arbor, so time will tell, but I will only give them so long. Perhaps the hardiness of John Davis is making the difference...See MoreCuteleier Z6 KS
