Sliding glass door...giving me a headache

We bought a house almost 2 years ago and the final project is the window treatments which have been a nightmare. I have finally decided on the roller and cellular shades for most of the house. The last decision is the sliding glass door in the master. It's a large room but no wall space on one side because of closets. I had originally planned to use sliding panels but now feel it would block too much light (this is the only light source for the room). I then decided on curtains and am now back to considering rollers. The rep at the blind company recommended using 2 rollers for the blinds which I don't think I could live with because I am too OCD. I also don't want to pay a fortune because we don't plan to stay in this house too much longer but need some way to block the sun in the morning. If we did go with one large roller which is what I am leaning towards, where would it mount?? I have looked at tons of pics and some look so ridiculous. Thoughts are so appreciated. I am literally at a point where I can't make a decision about the final touches and I am so ready to be done with this house

If you are not staying in the house too much longer I would just do split drapes. There is enough wall space to pull them back for full sun. I would not spend an extra dime on that sort of stuff. Most people tear that stuff out so they can do their own thing.

Thanks Debbi. That was certainly my most recent thought. I need blackout curtains and between the curtains and rod I am looking at spending at least $400. That's why I am back to other ideas. I cannot find panels that are wide enough and all have to be hemmed because of the height. (Only 8' ceilings)

I bought a Frigidaire gallery stove. I really love it. My favorite feature is the bottom rack attaches to the door so every time you open the door, the bottom rack slides out at the same time. It has a confection type setting and over all I am pleased with its performance. The drawback is that although Frigidaire has awesome stoves, the rest of the appliances are subpar. So if you are looking to match your SS well (assuming you are going with SS) frigidaire is hard to match other brands. Their SS is slightly darker due to the non fingerprint finish. Also their handles are made differently than other brands. It is a bow type handle but has a slight strip of shininess that almost looks like chrome in direct lighting. I have owned many Frigidaire appliances and did not realize their dishwashers and fridges get lots of complaints for failure. In a way I wish I would have researched this better because now I am in the need of a dishwasher and fridge. I have looked at many appliances and most don't seem to come close in SS finish.

I had the warranty and model numbers from the sticker that was already on the door, so they were able to match it up exactly. Can't recall the manufacturer offhand, but I can find that out.

What did you end up doing? If you are still deciding, I would advise against a 4 panel door for your 10 foot space. As another poster said, that will result in a lot of posts within a small area. The result will be less glass and a more crowded look. Once you factor in all the posts required for a 4 panel door, and the large section in the middle where the two closing panels meet, you will loose a lot of light and your opening will not actually be that much larger than a 3 panel door. I think 3 panels would work very well and, after allowing for the posts, will leave you with an opening that is around 3 foot wide. A 36" opening is very respectable - also, you will then only have one moving panel which equals less moving parts (see: things that may/will break some day) and only one screen door. A 4 panel door will generally be less weather resistant: two moving panels must join in the middle and try to create a seal with one another, which weakens the door's structure. this counts when a storm kicks up and you get a lot of wind driven rain. with a 3 panel door, each end of the moving panel will always close/seal against a FIXED panel. This is more stable and reliable. i'm not making this up - check the DP rating of a 3 panel door Vs. a 4 panel door for the same manufacturer. The 4 panel doors always have a lower rating. Another negative score against the 4 panel door is that you are forced to have the opening in the center of your room - which makes it difficult to furnish, as you must allow a passage way through the center of a room. Not an efficient use of space in many situations. 3 panels allow the flexibility to have the opening on the left, center, or right side. I'm not an authority on this... just my opinion :-) Good luck! I live in Arizona. I’m currently having a new home built and just had my 8’ sliders installed in one guest room and master bedroom. The sill on my sliders is about 1 1/2 ~ 2” and I have kicked it several times now. Was just wondering today why is it so high? My contractor for my foundation told me I would have ALL level Entryways going from outside to inside and vise versa.. therefore myself or anyone else would never have to worry about tripping over any threshold.. I definitely have two tripping hazards! I will be contacting my foundation contractor first I guess.. hhhmmm

Do you sew? A few less expensive panels can be quickly and easily lined with blackout curtain liner, and two can be sewn together, and the seam hidden in the folds of the drapes for the extra width.

I don't sew. Although it would come in handy right now. I do have a friend that may be able to help me if it wasn't a huge job.

I agree with Debbi. If you don't have access to somebody who can sew, Ikea sells a kind of double sided tape that you can just DIY the length. I wouldn't recommend that over sewing for long term use, but if it's only for a couple of years it'll be ok. Blackout curtains often have kind of a plasticky backing that would stick really well to that tape.

As for the width, search Amazon. For example these are 100" wide, for $26 a panel. I like that they have a linen look. They might not be high end, but they'll be fine for temporary use. If you hate them, the returns are free and they make it so easy.

one other thing: you don't have to mount the curtain rod up near the ceiling, which is a current trend. you can mount it exactly the height that the curtains are, eliminating the need to hem them.

Rod extending past the slider, you purchase one extra wide drapery panel. You have room to the right for the drapery to stack back.

This height for rod and width installed , except your panel will stack to the right.

Lots of extra wide options on line.

Target! You could do this for so much less than $400. Just find something neutral
