Design Dilemma Kitchens Remodeling

Help with 2 moldings meeting on 1 wall

We have two different moldings meeting on the same wall. The molding on left is from new cabinets while molding on right is from the existing molding we had in family room. The two now meet in a way that was designed by the cabinet folks. While I appreciate the creative attempt, I think it looks terrible. Any suggestions?

Add more pictures of the molding of the cabinets at the other end. Also photos showing more of the space.

Ooh, I agree. We need to see what both moldings look like, but I think the top smaller piece is too short. It needs to be carried over so that the bottom lines up with the bottom of the cabinet molding piece. Then the molding on the right from the family room can terminate into it. A good finish carpenter with a coping saw should be able to make a nice transition. You don't want to have a return on the family room piece. A return on the kitchen piece would probably be okay, but it is hard to see the 3d aspect.

Have good ventilation in the tub and use it. Use a silicon or siliconized latex caulk in the tub instead of a latex caulk. Less likely, make sure there are no cracks or pinholes in the grout that are allowing water easy access behind the tile. Check the tub deck along the walls and corners. Make sure it's not holding water against the caulk after you are done showering. Some plastic tubs can be deformed and have a slight slope towards the wall instead of shedding water into the tub. If your deck edge holds water, then after you towel off it might be prudent to towel off that area.

Thank you all for taking the time to respond here! I consider it a red-letter day when GW recognized experts like Casey, worthy, brickeyee, macv weigh in. And kaib, while I don't recognize your GW name, I appreciate the info from someone who's used one. macv, you wrote: In Massachusetts, any structural element that is not prescribed in the one & two family building code must be designed and stamped by an engineer (not an architect). and It is not wise to design one small part of an exterior wall without considering the entire house frame. Start with the whole and work toward the parts or hire a professional. I completely agree with the latter statement about being wise to hire a professional. What makes me nervous now is that I *have* hired an architect for this remodel. According to the MA license lookup, his license is current. However, in light of your comments and my own understanding (admittedly limited), I am concerned now that he hasn't thoroughly thought through this area of the remodel--and possibly has not consulted with a structural engineer on it. Is this something a licensed architect ought to have picked up on? Or at least mentioned to me? He's been licensed for 10 years and working as an architect that long. His drawing has the two window units, each 2 1/8 inches width away from the corner. (The 2 1/8 inches were put in at my suggestion to allow for that much casing--only because it balanced minimizing the width for the view and mimics what's done in the bay in the dining room at the front of the house. But this suggestion to the architect was aesthetic on my part--not structural. I am not an structural engineer, only fairly good at math and analytical stuff.) This is a house built in 1884 in MA. I think the architect is assuming 2x4 studs in the exterior wall. While I do understand that in an existing structure, it's impossible to determine everything about the hidden as-is conditions prior to opening up the structure, I would think that if he is assuming existing 2x4 studs for the plan drawing, that he would have at least noted a 3 jack stud requirement for this header span. Older houses are a lot more air- leaky. Air flows around much more easily in an older home. Most newer construction tries to be as air-tight as possible. Plus I believe newer construction with cement as the foundation is going to add humidity to the air for awhile too - my new home ran high on humidity as the concrete continued to dry out for the first few months or so we were in there. It's a combination of issues I think. I don't necessarily think every newer home is going to fall over in a brief power outage. :-) The original poster said this has been going on for over 2 months, and that they were well above 80% humidity for awhile. That's tropical rainforest level! Plus they had a flooded crawlspace and needed mold remediation on top of that. There are some serious water issues at play here.

Are you talking 5 feet by 5 feet? A twin bed is 39" wide by 75" long. That is 15" longer than your room. The only way this bed might fit is if you angled it from one corner to the opposite.

I can show a better photo. What’s a nice transition? Would the two points of molding touch? Or how would a molding look without a return? New to all of this so bear with me! :)

Perhaps something like this? (This is a little different because it is an inside corner, but maybe something similar could be done with the return on the cabinet trim and then a scribing/coping combo on the family room trim. (Or of the finish carpenter thinks it would work better the other way, do that.)

First pic is to show rhe detail rhey used in cutting one piece and rhe second is to show what it looked like after caulk and paint.

Be aware that although this is a small job, it would take a while of tedious work. Be prepared to pay well for it if you want a good result. It will be someone who is more of a craftsman/likes woodworking challenges who wants to take this on rather than any finish carpenter.

Shame on your cabinet designer for not addressing this in the design phase and leaving it to you to have to wrestle with! I would have them make a return on the cabinet molding that extends up to and abutts the family room molding.

Since the meet on the flat part of a wall I would use a decorative plinth block of some sort and have each end die into the block. This is showing an outside corner block but should give you the idea of what I am speaking of.

Have the family room crown butt up to the cabinet and overlap the cabinet crown and do a return?

I'd like a better picture. Is the cabinet face even with the wall or proud of the wall? How tall are the wall and cabinet crown mouldings?

As I look through cabinet mouldings on this site, I don't see any that match the profile on your wall (wm 47, wm 49, or wm 45)
