Sliding patio door

I'm getting quotes on a sliding patio door. So far, I have quotes for a Sunrise door and a Pro-Via door. The quote for the Pro-Via is $1000 more than the Sunrise -- any opinions on one or the other? Is the higher price worth it?

Actually...the Sunrise is the nicer door in my opinion so you are winning on both fronts.

+1. As long as its the Sunrise (not Essentials) door, it is the better unit. As long as that contractor is reputable, sounds like a win for you.

Sliders are great if space is a concern. As you won't have to worry about the door opening into walls or furniture. They've come a long ways since the old aluminum doors. Vinyl is the most common door material (at least where I live) and they come in a few colors. Provide you buy the right glass package they are energy efficient. Some even come with a foot bolt that is additional lock instead of having to use a broom handle. Patio doors (like a French door but one panel is stationary) are great if you have no space concerns. They typically have wider openings than a slider door. They also have sliding screens so you can still enjoy having the door open without bugs. These doors come in variety of materials from vinyl to steel to wood to wood with aluminum cladding on the exterior. Typically these doors are harder meet the current energy efficiency standards. Which that is mostly determined by which material the door is made out of. These doors can come with multipoint lock systems which means while they lock in the middle they also lock at the top and bottom. Which makes a glass door as secure as it can. Both a good doors just depends on which look/space you have for the door.

The major drawbacks of sliders are misalignment and roller wear. The lower weight bearing rollers often wear out relatively fast---sometimes as soon as three or four years with more than average use---opening/closing 5+ times a day. Adjustment is usually fairly simple, as long as the adjusting mechanism is not damaged/rusted/too dirty. And the adjusting mechanism and roller assembly is replaceable. The other gotcha is the amount of light/heat/cold the large expanse of glass transfers. A curtain has to be wall mounted and is cumbersome to open/close to operate the door. Double doors generally do not have any of those problems. The big gotcha with doubles are the room taken when open/operated.

I have a patio door with a single sidelight the same width as one of the patio doors. It looks like a 3 panel setup but only two of the doors open. I think they are 36" wide but would have to double check. So a bit wider that your existing opening. Looks similar to the door in the picture but i have two doors that open.

I would call in another Marvin Dealer as if you were starting from scratch. Have them come in for a consult and a second estimate. Ask the question and see what he/she says. Even if you’re happy with the first dealer, dealers can charge differently so at least you’ll have something to compare apples to apples with. I actually have two appointments scheduled for Sunrise windows next week, but I’m not actually sure which dealer I’ll end up with. I have to say though both my mother and my sister had the french doors installed. They weren’t Marvins but they were extremely happy with that style.

I just talked to the Pro-Via guy and he's doing a really hard sell on why they're so much better. I'm confused. :)

Don't be. The Sunrise door (assuming it is not the Essentials) is the better door.

+1. Everyone is going to tell you why their product is better, but obviously they can't all be the best. We install the Provia sliding doors from time to time when option content dictates(not our primary offering). We do not install the Sunrise door but compete against it. I'm here to tell you, the Sunrise door is the better unit of these two provided that it is their main/upper line door.

Provia makes excellent entry and storm doors, and in my experience their windows and sliding doors are serviceable. The Sunrise sliding door on the other hand is one of the top vinyl sliding door units on the market, and that is pretty universally agreed upon by pros. As long as the company offering you that option is established and reputable, this is an easy WIN for you. Don't over think it.
