Haworthia help - no response, dead already?
Comments (6)Thanks so much for your input! Yes the peaty soil was the only kind I had on hand, but I dug them out again today because the grittier soil had arrived in the mail. THERE WERE NEW ROOTS! I feel better about them already, though the advice about deeper pots makes perfect sense. Now the two round ones (retusa and cooperi?) are sharing a deeper pot, and truncata has its own (also deeper), in a grittier soil mix. Hope they find their new homes comfortable......See MoreSomething went wrong with tomato transplants
Comments (18)I check the soil twice a day. Morning when I get up and at night around sunset when the day is cooling off. Unless it's pouring rain, of course. Then I check on it when the rain stops to make sure the soil is draining and not leaving and puddles or something. The soil is definitely draining well or my other plants in the same bed would be dying off as well. It's just the tomatoes that seem to be a problem. I protected the other two last night and they are doing well today. Nice and perky the way tomatoes should be. I think maybe the smaller ones just weren't outside as long as the guy at the nursery thought they were. They may have needed a little extra hardening off. I'm going to get new plants (though I feel like I'm not gonna see any 'maters til August at this rate). I'll be sure to harden them off myself for a few days and protect them the first couple days they're in the bed until they recover from the transplant....See MoreHi! I need help figuring out what's going on with my succulent
Comments (13)If you're thinking of getting into this hobby a diamond tipped drill bit and a drill(friend's or own) will come in very handy. Once you have those, every container you see you will want to drill and plant some succulents inside. Now what your problem is, is that it is overwatered. The dark colouration is an early sign of rot, and it is wrinkly because the roots are probably dead due to rot and it has no way of getting water. What to do Find a pot with drainage or make your own. Take out plant, cut of somewhere 1-2cm above the dark area. Set the cutting somewhere shady and dry and let the wound callous over. This will take 3-7 days depending on climate. Once calloused over. Put into a good draining soil mix. Do not water till you see new growth. I would also advice you to read up or watch some youtube vids on how to save a plant from rot and how to propagate succulents. That way you will be more prepared. And from now on, if it ain't got a hole, make one....See MorePlease help me figure out historic subway tile, what's the diff? Pics?
Comments (38)Don't worry, I'll be going out of my way to salvage as many pieces of tile I can. The local salvage place doesn't take used tile (only surplus unused tile), but I'll offer it up on Craigslist to a DIYer - I'm sure there are plenty of hipsters who would LOVE to get their hands on vintage subway tile.. Same with the colorful glazed tile on one of the bedroom fireplace hearths - tile is loose and many are broken, and with those tiles having not been made in probably a hundred years, I can't repair it without it looking like a janky patch job. They would be fantastic as accent pieces in a kitchen backsplash or in a mosaic art piece. Luckily in these parts, all the houses are old and folks love nabbing your cast-off materials for their own projects, so I'm not too worried about the tiles being lost to the landfill if we don't reuse them ourselves. Now I need to start researching and perusing materials. Definitely want to avoid the obviously contemporary pillowy/beveled tile. Luckily, those little hexagonal porcelain tiles are kinda back en vogue, so hopefully I can get my hands on some equally tiny non-beveled ones. Depending on the design, might do some black accents/patterns. As for my kitchen, they didn't do tile on the kitchen walls back then - all the cabinets (like the built in ones in butler pantries) were backed with beadboard, so I'll be doing beadboard for backsplash. Heh, if you want pics, I'll have to remember to dredge this thread up in a couple years. We're taking things slow with fixing this house up....See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
