(Edited from information by Monarch Watch regarding monarchs that migrate to Mexico)

Large monarchs have best chance of reaching Mexico, surviving winter, reproducing (very few small monarchs are among those that return). Reasons : better lift, better glide, larger bodies, more resistance to stress.

Reared butterflies average smaller than wild. The difference can be reduced if attention is given to rearing larvae under the best conditions :

- clean

- as nearly natural as possible

- abundance of living or freshy picked and sanitized foliage
