family room area rug advice

I’m looking for advice on what type of area rug to get in my family room. The floors are gray, the sectional is gray, and the ottoman is navy with black iron legs. The room is sorta awkwardly shaped with the sectional and ottoman in one area and then two chairs to create another little sitting area. The accent chairs are light, natural wood with cream fabric seats (the Studio McGee ones fro
Target). A friend suggested I get a natural jute rug for the area with sectional to “soften things”, but I just am not sure that would look good. I was thinking of doing a faux animal Hyde under the two chairs but not sure what color since I don’t know if gray would be too close to floor color and beige/cream would be too similar to chair fabric. Would love any advice on type of rugs to get (more importantly larger area rug). Here are photos of my space and I’ll try to include some rugs I like.

Our Gentleman's Parlor is 18 by 18 with a walkway along one length. We have a nine by eleven area rug. I can't imagine having anything smaller. I agree with Patty to draw up a scale floor plan with the furniture placement before you buy a rug if you really want to buy a rug now. Personally from experience of building three homes I'd wait until you were in the home. You won't really have a feel for what works until you are in the home.

I'm glad you found something you really like. Just a small consideration, but the Chinese vase at the corner of the fireplace looks rather unbalanced, and the chair by it seems a little too large for that space. You could try positioning it where it faces the long side of the ottoman, i.e. facing towards the windows.

In the last picture you posted, it looks like there’s a light colored chair on the right. If that’s a chair, pull it away from the wall and set its two front legs on the rug. Wasn’t your original question what additional things can you put on the rug? And that would bring the chair into a conversational grouping with the other furniture already set on the rug.

This is the rug I ended up ordering!...I liked the colours of ffpalms but wasn't sure about the pattern and then I came across this...Its cozy and the colours are muted but match the colours of the stained glass...Thank you all for your help...I also love the piece of art on the wall but haven't purchased it yet. I will wait for the rug and then decide what I want there but thank you again @ffpalms for the idea to stack the windows and hang a piece of art...The wall looks busier but also fuller in a good way :) Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm really happy with the basement now...Our kids love playing down there and its the hangout spot when family comes over @plantsarefriends

Too much gray in area. Whatever you decide I would not go with gray rug.

You have a lovely room, very neutral. I love the idea of a cowhide in the sitting area and something textural, like flokati in the sectional area. Agree to stay away from grey, but any other neutral color would look great. I also like many of your choices, but would probably stay on the lighter side vs dark. Where are windows in the room?

Wow, thank you so much for your feedback! The windows (sliding screen door) are across from the accent chairs. Your pictures look very nice but I’m not sure if flokati is really my style. I like something that’s more textured and lower pile since I have 2 young boys whose mess would get lost in anything high.

totally understand about the flokati and kids:) texture is the key IMO. I have a couple more thoughts i'll send in a separate message.
