I thought about doing this a couple years ago and was told that they could do it but they would have to bleach my hair first and color it with the silver color. It would also be an endless thing to keep it up. I chose not to do it. I'm one of those people who don't go to get my hair even cut but 3 or 4 times at the most a year.

I'm confused. If you like the silver, why not just leave it all natural? That's what I did. I will never color my hair again. I'm loving the money and time saved! LOL

I'm confused too! I think the silver is an upgrade from the salt and pepper. I'm going to consult a professional but I don't think I'm up for a lot of maintenance. Maybe I'll just cut off the blond bottom. The other piece is that this is the first time I've had long hair and I want to give it a chance. I just don't like all the variations in color right now. I have to say that you guys are a great sounding board on Houzz. Thanks Whistle and everyone!!!

Best to cut off the blond bottom, and then you are done and do not need to color your hair anymore. You do not need to go to a professional for this, except to cut your hair, unless you can cut it yourself.

When I stopped coloring my hair (to a medium ash brown), the natural color was already almost white and looked platinum blond. I stripped all the color dye from my hair and then dyed it platinum blond. When it started to grow out, the roots matched my hair, but my hair was not salt & pepper gray - it was closer to white. Also, I was wearing my hair fairly short.

After I stripped all the color from my hair and dyed it platinum blond, I was able to put cellophane dyes in it, and I added blue, turquoise, yellow, and red stripes. That was difficult to keep up because I could only do one color at a time and had to protect hair that was not being dyed with Vaseline.

Putting clear henna on hair that has been stripped will help condition it.

If you want the blonde out you can go to a professional and have the blonde stripped. I'm assuming that it is grey underneath.

My last hair color was applied Leap Year Day 2020. I wear my hair shorter in back and chin length in front. Today I expect to finally see the last bit of light brown hair on the floor at my hairdresser's shop. I've been getting compliments on my hair for the last several months. It's a clear white at the front hairline and a mix of my original very dark brown and white over the rest of my head. I'm glad I waited to see what nature would provide. One thing 'provided' was considerable regrowth! I'd lost a good bit of hair in 2018 when I started treatment for multiple myeloma. The grey isn't as 'heavy' as the white, but my hair no longer feels 'thin'.

It's so nice to be in and out of the shop in thirty minutes for just shampoo, cut and blow dry!

I have not been inside a hair salon in 40 years. I cut my own blunt cut. I colored my hair light ash brown many many years ago from Nice and Easy box and then thought I did not like chemicals on my head and let it go. My hair is silver and I do nothing but shampoo and condition. I get many compliments and asked what I use. I'm an all-natural type of person.

I have salt and pepper also, what my mother has. She always called it "mousey" I wish I had white silver hair! I would love it. If I get an urge to color, I by a box of "semi permanent" and it gradually fads, no more roots issues.

I got tired of the time and money it took to keep my white hairs camoflaged. i went natural and over a few years turned silver white. i had prematurely white hair like my father, and i get compliments on it.

Just a suggestion which is something I found by accident most shampoos have a slight amount of color added to them. I buy whatever appeals to me or is on sale so can not give brands. My hair currently looks like it has been professionally streaked. If I use green or blue the darker colored hairs stand out. If I use yellow or red the white hairs take on a yellow cast. The white thick paste that I was using made everything shades of blond. If you can find small bottles to experiment with you might find that some can cause a slight color shift depending on your hair type. Some hair types absorb color easier than others so I never know what color my hair will be after I wash it. Currently a dark brown base with salt and pepper hairs.
