Installing New Granite Tile Over Old Granite Fireplace Surround?
Comments (2)No you can not install granite, ceramic or porcelain tile over any type of tile. It needs to be removed and prepped for the new granite. If cement or concrete board is installed over the old granite then you can retile it without removing the original tile but there is no need. It is not a big deal to remove the old granite, you will be very surprised how easy it will come off. At 30 ftsq we are talking maybe an hour or two for 1 or 2 labourers with a chipping hammer on an average size fireplace to remove it. That seems to be a very high quote, however without really seeing the job it wouldn't be fair to the tile guy to dispute that quote. edit: I must add if the cause of the original tile cracking it will likely crack again. Is the quote include addressing the cracking issue as well?...See MoreTile or Granite Fireplace Surround (Update)
Comments (26)Linelle, It basically comes down to what material they have and what you want. In my previous house I had black marble tile and loved it. When we built this house, I was going to do the same thing but my fabricators were out of the tile. They simply fabricated from a marble slab exactly as you described above-3 pieces. However, the price difference went from $ to $$$! It is more custom and I guess you could say "historical" looking, but honestly the other way gave almost the same effect to anyone casually glancing at my fireplace....See Moreupdate my off centered fireplace. help!

Comments (1)Are you planning on removing the mantel surround? You might find it a bit of a challenge to remove the granite without destroying it. Regarding the material to use in it's place, we need a little more info about the room and the style you are wanting to achieve. Can you send some room pictures too?...See MoreMeg G
