30" crack in front of sink - granite countertop

There's a thin crack in front of the sink that's approx. 30". What would be the cause of this? What are the fixes and is this something that could've looked like a line before turning into a crack?

I have seen cracked granite. It's very rare if it's installed correctly. At least on the ladies' kitchen gossip circuit. (No professional experience here.) The theory is that localized thermal shock can expand microfissures and lead to cracking. So can twisting forces in a strong earthquake. According to my tile setter (an expert who often oversees installation of granite), even the thermal shock kind are down to bad installation of some kind. If the cabinets are installed properly, the granite is supported properly, the fabrication is done properly, and you don't abuse it with things like the football team using it as a stage to practice their can-can dance, you'll be fine! And if the contrariness of Fate should choose you to make an example of, and serve you up a crack for defying her, your good fabricator should be able to do a mend which will be nigh on invisible.

Thanks to graniteshop for jumping in here. Now that I have seen what an air vent is (they are not required in my area), I have a better understandiung of why it may have cracked. Another fabricator wrote the following: "The hole for the vent is drilled all the way through the material like a faucet hole and is most likely an 1-3/8" diameter just like the rest of the faucet holes. There could be a couple causes of the crack. It could have been cracked during the install and not noticed until this point. It's also possible that they crack was caused when the hole was drilled. If they did it on site with the wrong style core bit enough heat could have been built up to cause the stone to crack. Also, if the cabinets were not level or if the top was not properly shimmed the top could crack after install. If the top was cracked before install it will still probably be perfectly flat. If it was cracked after install then you may be able to look down the top and see either a high point or low point in the top at the location of the crack. " Seems like good info to me.

I read a recent post on Stone Advice from a poster who was having difficulty with and installation of Santa Cecelia. The problems centered around the difficulty in color matching at seams. Evidently this stone has a great deal of color variation even within the slab itself so when a seam is made and another piece has to be used often there will be problems with color variation. Being aware of this problem is something to think about when considering the suggestion of the fabricator to replace half of your slab. Even if it comes from the same lot the colors could be vastly different from what you have left on your counter. I think I'd get a restoration professional in to see what could be done to save what you have.

One thing about a big sink: why do you need it? Just wondering: We tell people clean up your dishes ASAP. Don't let them soak: (Change cleaning habits.) Cook: soap up: rinse: stick in dishwasher ASAP. So I agree with going with a smaller sink: or a standard sink. Do not want to void cabinet warranty. This summer: we had a customer "insist" on a three holed sink: Well: I didn't know it would turn into a nightmare! I got the sink wholesale for customer as a nice jester: saved them $200-$300. Well the sink wouldn't fit on day of install! So, handyman had to go over there and cut under the sink into the cabinet! Then I got "yelled" at by the customer for not informing him of the size sink that he picked & insisted on: In good faith, I was helping him to save money buying for him! He had a drop in 3 holed over size sink: big difference from an undermount when it came to the cabinets and new granite. ***Waivers from now on and the customer can buy their own oversized sink & be responsible for the modifications. Just speaking from experience here. ~sorry if I sound like I am venting~ It's all about communication and knowledge before hand: always good to know: I guess be thankful they are bringing that up: ask them to explain in more detail to you what they mean!

You have a classic reinforcment rod failure. The rod must be removed, no matter what the guy on Craigslist who wants to charge you $400.00 for pouring epoxy over it says. His repair works for about a month because he hasn't stopped your sink from leaking, which caused the failure. (And your sink flange is a black/brown unsanitary mess, I promise. Hey, you make food here, remember?)

I'd charge about $1,500.00 to fix this if you're within 3 hours of Sarasota, Florida.

The very best repair is a sink replacement. Now the crack is nonexistent and you've got a spectacular sink, but it's 3x as expensive as the repair.

That repair will be fairly inconspicuous.

Note the crack in the front rail please.

Hahah thanks Joseph. I was hoping you'd have better news for me. Unfortunately I don't live in Florida to take on your offer. Thanks though!

One thing though for me to maybe be aware in the future, would a line be a sign that it will become a crack due to the rodding issue?... Assuming I go with granite again...

A line where please? It's like being pregnant. You either are or you aren't. Your rod is blown or it's not.

Rodding isn't done with engineered stone because estone is so much stronger that it's unnessary. Rodding in natural stone is old school obsolete technology. They have clamps that keep the stone from breaking during transport nowadays, the only time the rod has a job. Once the top is properly installled, the cabinets provide the strength in tension necessary to keep the stone from cracking.
