My no-backsplash backsplash
Comments (33)I'm not seeing a current picture witht he sink -- just the one with the paper down on the wood which I understand to be before use. That wall looks like it has a raw end of drywall, not a side that is finished (paper or whatever) or maybe even no drywall. It looks like they tried to smooth joint compound in there, either by itself over your studs and built up or over something less than a full side of finished drywall. Joint compound will turn to mud (that's what they call it when it's wet -- hence the verb to "mud" the walls) and dissolve away if it gets wet. Paint will only seal the surface, and if water gets behind it -- well, I dare say it is probably worse than damp sheetrock, which is worse than damp green board. You say they had to sheer away your window sill. Did that sill come below the window too? I don't think you've got clean drywall there. I think you've got a really poor job of mudding and an even worse job of sealing the joint. That's my guess....See MoreDurango limestone backsplash?
Comments (15)Ngng, I found your backsplash in the blog yesterday - that is SO gorgeous with your granite! Is your durango honed or tumbled? Would you mind very much if I just copied your backsplash verbatim??? (I thought it might be too traditional for what I was thinking of as my contemporary kitchen, but the carpenter starting putting up the crown molding today, and it's starting to look a little more traditional...) What does everyone think of diagonal tile on the backsplash with a diagonal floor? (Only a narrow strip of floor will show - about two tiles across - it's a galley kitchen!) Keepingitsimple, no decision yet. I really would like to do the backsplash now (i.e. in a few weeks), while I've got the contractor's attention... because I really need to paint, and I want the paint color to coordinate with the backsplash. Seeing the kitchen take shape might help me figure it out... for example, that crown molding might influence a few things. (Glad I didn't buy those super-contemporary cabinet door handles yet!!!)...See Moremarble tile backsplash and the usual staining/etch issue?
Comments (10)Don't discount the fact that the top to your blender might come off while making margaritas. That can get everywhere! (Personal experience.) Or the fact that when you are teaching a youngster how to make a red velvet cake that you forget to tell them one of the first things about using a mixer is that you don't pull it out of the batter with it running. (Also personal experience, and you have no idea how far flung batter can be until you are cleaning it off of the ceiling 15' away from the accident.) Then there's the time my sister didn't really put the espresso maker together correctly and tried to make a pot. Thankfully, that wasn't my kitchen, and no actual bloodshed resulted, but you can bet she'd rather make a run to Starbucks these days than clean up those grounds. And the dent in the underside of the cabinet is still there, but you have to stand on your head to really see it. Then there was the time the cat had an ear abcess and the first I really knew of it (super fuzzy guy) was the blood he had slung all over the kitchen when he shook his head when it burst. Even with him on the floor, yes, it went everywhere and was a bear to clean off of the painted walls. I'd hate to think about a more porous stone with it on it. There was also the mess from the brother in law who cleaned fish in the kitchen.....and the spouse who thought it would be a great idea to use a spray cleaner on a greasy engine part and splattered that black yucky grease everywhere when the cleaner hit it.....and the time that the fruit punch spilled into the cooler, and instead of pouring that outside, a brilliant soul decided to try to pour it down the kitchen sink and splashed it everywhere.......and I could go on and on. I don't think my stories are too atypical of a lot of the wear and tear a kitchen will see over time, and I could never see putting in a surface that wasn't easily cleanable and stain resistant, even if your kitchen's occupants are more thoughtful and well behaved. I couldn't ever be a marble person, anywhere in the home. There's too much life being lived here to have to worry about delicate surfaces....See MoreAustin Limestone Backsplash
Comments (5)It will be a cleaning nightmare as it is very porous and even sealing won't help it any with tomato splashing while cooking as it will cause a discoloring. The stone can easily chip too and due to the roughness of it any rags and in particular sponges will leave some traces on it as well. If you want to use it then use it outside of any splash zones....See Moredoggiemom
