Good Variety of Lavender for a balcony?
Comments (0)Hello all, Posted this question in "Balconies" but it's pretty dead over there. :-( I have been trying to grow lavender on my west-facing, 2nd floor balcony for 2 years. It grows ok, but never blooms and dies off in the Spring. What could be wrong? I LOVE lavender, so any suggestions are most welcome. My herbs do very well so I am thinking that I am picking the wrong variety or going about it totally wrong. Also, I would love suggestions regarding anything floral that's container/balcony worthy and smells good :-) Thanks....See MoreRoses on Balcony
Comments (2)Reine des Violettes can be grown in a pot, I've done it, but she gets really huge. And she does not like too much pruning so you can't just whack her back because she won't bloom then. So I don't think she'd be a good candidate for that space. I'm not familiar with any of the other ones but most hybrid teas, floribundas, mini/minifloras and short shrub roses should do great. As for wintering that depends on how much trouble you want to go to. The best place is in the garage but that would mean hauling them up and down which will be a BIG job! I winter mine outside along the south wall of the house but they're wrapped in burlap and packed with leaf mulch which would be hard to do up on a balcony. Perhaps just pushing them up against the wall of the house and wrapping them with burlap would be enough but the only way to know that for sure is to try it and see. And even then it would depend on how severe the winter was. The thing you need to look at is how to keep the root balls insulated in the pots and the canes from drying out on the tops....See MoreLook what the Heat/Sun did to my flowers!
Comments (22)Hi Hawk, LOL I just like to mist my plants first thing int he morning and later in the evening. They seem to like it. I'm guessing my blooming plants are around 3-5 years old. A few are about 1yr old. I just started this April. I have quite a few that I bought from Hawaii that are newly rooted this year so those are not blooming. I am hoping to get lucky next year....See MoreAdd pillars to 2nd floor balcony and retractable privacy screen?
Comments (4)This place looks like it might be able to provide the right type of retractable screen, eh? I called and while it was a brief call, the man said they can be more sheer for sun-blocking only or else can be more for privacy where you can't see through - and he said they come in something like a hundred different colors, and can be retracted either manually or w/ a motor. :) http://www.lasvegassolarscreens.com/patio_shades.html...See MoreSara Pammant
