Need help arranging LR
Comments (7)I have done something similar to what brutuses is recommending. My room is smaller than yours, I think.. but it is long, has a fireplace on one end and a number of doors and windows that interrupt the walls. Similar to your room, the path to the bedrooms (upstairs in my case) is through the living room. So I have the fireplace on one end-- my sofa along the wall that would be equivalent to floating your sofa with its back to the kitchen pass through .. tv in between the sliding door (windows in my case) and the entry to the bedroom foyer (front door in my case). I think it works really well.. if needed, the fireplace seating can supplement the core seating-- and from the sofa, you can enjoy the fireplace and the tv... and you still have pretty decent walking paths through the room. You could probably set up a third little area on the far wall. Stereo and maybe books/reading chair or such. Something small but cozy. I am surprised your prints aren't working on the walls. Do you just need to get used to the color? What color frames? Good luck-- and enjoy your new home....See MorePlease help me configure my LR!
Comments (20)Rachel - here we meet again :) We're actually struggling with this same issue now. I don't know how serious you were but I did note a question of whether you even wanted a TV. We haven't watched TV for over 2 years and only a handful of movies. I hated the idea of having my livingroom centered around something that was not only unsightly, but also rarely used. The current arrangment we have, which I think would look wonderful in your livingroom, is we have 2 loveseats at a diagonal to the fireplace and have the sofa where yours is now. In your case though, I would pull the sofa out and create what in essence would serve as a sofa table/pop up TV unit. You can still keep the picture you have above the sofa and the TV would rise out when "needed". Visitors have often commented on how they love the arrangment (without my saying a word). It's so easy to converse with everyone who is in the room. At least four people (more depending on any additional seeting) could comfortably watch TV. Comments (7)My advice is first figure out what you need in the room for optimal function. What type of desk, chair, storage, etc.? Once you'd determined the essential elements, figure out their layout. Where does the desk make the most sense? What type of light control is required? Etc. Drawing out the room to scale on graph paper can help here. If you want to hide cords, a solid desk against a wall with outlets can easily achieve that but there are all sorts of other tricks for cord management. Style is determined by your taste and what is cohesive to the rest of your home. Comments (12)Thank you Cecilia. I appreciate your suggestions. I've had my eye on a few Ruggable rugs for a while, similar color scheme to like what you showed, although my style is more toward world/global. I've got a few Middle Eastern and African textiles throughout the house. And some trinkets from my travels. I'm thinking the next rug will need to be 9x12 since I'm trying to use the whole room, and maybe less geometrical than the current one? I'm also realizing that rug positioning makes a HUGE difference in how the room feels. I've been so tired hauling sectional pieces all week that I've been lazy about positioning the rug, but It makes a world of difference. Hi Decoenthusiaste. I tried floating it in the center yesterday, but I could only figure out how to fit 3 pieces in that layout. I plan to bring the 4th piece into the house this weekend to fiddle around with it. The other struggle with that is how to get a lamp up close to the sofa for reading. I do like any L shape, since it's so comfortable :) Would you still put the FP/TV on that dining room wall if spaced out from the wall (a bit like my 3rd layout photo, but sofa out from the wall?) I agree with you that my favorite place for FP/TV is on the dining room wall. I just haven't figured out how to incorporate the whole room that way, because that brings all of the attention to that larger section of the room, and ignores section from entrance--dining room. Here is how I've currently arranged the room, with the 4th piece photoshopped in. The 4th piece could probably also be separated and roated perpendicular to the rest of the sofa. It actually is plenty of seating because it's usually just me and my BF anyway, and at least a sectional can form an L shape which is nice for conversation. My previous sofa only sat 3 people in a row. I never have big gatherings. I mostly just want a comfortable place to watch TV and read, and this sectional fits the bill perfectly. I love it. Just trying to determine the best layout, and whether the 4th piece is useful, or if I should exchange it for a different piece from the model. I also don't mind semi-blocking the entrance to the study. I'm the only one who uses that room because I work from home, and I'm able to access it through my bedroom, which has another doorway toward the main part of the house. Old house. Old style :)...See Morelobo_93
