What would you do to these stair rails and posts

Good dayI am looking to update my stairs. I do not want to lose the curved shape of the stairs. What are my options for updating the look, and are there any suggestions for another runner?

I see the rest of your trim has been painted white, one popular option is to paint the risers, skirt, and spindles white leaving the handrail and treads natural to match the floors.

circuspeanut, That makes total sense. And I totally agree that it's a better layout. But---- we're really having renovation burnout now. As you know we started demoing the main living area a year ago.. and we're still installing trim and living with doorless cabinets and plywood counters in the pantry. And that's spending every second of spare time on it! So, I'm trying to find a good compromise between making this cruddy bathroom work and look better, and not making huge amounts of extra work for DH. He's the plumber and electrician. He's already groaning about moving the door.... but I do think that will be a pretty dramatic improvement over the floor plan we have now. We've decided to do a new tub/shower combo, and he was relieved that that meant he didn't need to break into the 1950's drains to move the toilet. :)

do i paint the underside of stair railing black as well as the rail?

Yes, of course you do. Take a few minutes to construct a cardboard or plastic shield that can be slid around each of your spindles to keep the paint from getting on them and then carefully paint the underside of the banister.

I would catch the load on a beam and take the load from a post on the right at the sheetrock cut to the far left of the landing if there is headroom, or to the right of the landing if there isn't. Hello! Getting ready to demo an old one wall stair rail and install all new newel posts, handrail and balusters. Question is, do I install and then stain or stain fist, then install? Hoping to get professional opinion on this. Thank you!

Beautiful staircase!

I think painting the spindles and handrail white to match the rest of the trim in your home would really update the stairs. The oak feels dated. Then, a patterned runner.

I would not paint the risers white, as I hear that is hard to maintain.

What is your budget? Are you interested in updating all the spindles and handrails as well?

If you're on a budget I would avoid leaving the handrail oak, which doesn't seem to make a large enough impact.

I am interested in updating the spindles and large posts.. I am assuming it would cost around 1500-200$?

If I chose metal spindles, can I paint the hand rail black?

I would just paint the spindles white, and leave the rest stained. Then get an interesting runner. The curved staircase is beautiful. Instead of iron spindles, you could use simple white ones. I'd still keep the stained handrail to match your floors.
