Please help spruce up boring front yard!
Comments (8)Hmmm......I'm not sure about your assessment that this landscape needs more color or character :-) While not necessarily unique - and few development landscapes are - it does offer a decent selection of tough, low maintenance PNW landscape choices with a reasonable amount of foliage color, if not flowers. There are some gaps you could fill in but I'd be cautious about adding many "new" plants - that often creates a very busy, confusing and messy look. Maybe selecting just one or two new plants to accomplish this is best. Or if you are unhappy with what you have, get rid of these and try something new altogether. Some shrubs that work especially well together and are ideal for a PNW garden are Nandina domestica 'Gulf Stream', Abelia x grandiflora 'Kaleidoscope', Spiraea 'Magic Carpet' and Berberis thunbergii 'Concorde' or Bagatelle'. These can be accented with a purple leafed heuchera ('Frosted Violet', 'Blackberry Ice') and an evergreen grass like Carex testacea or Carex oshimensis 'Evergold'. But there are lots of other possibilities that are available that a visit to your better local independent garden center (NOT box store!) will reveal. You can also certainly add a couple more heathers of different colors to fill in where the first is and perhaps another 1 or 2 to accent the bed on the other side of the walkway. btw, I'd get rid of or move the struggling rhody to the far left - it is acting as a distraction in its current state. If you want to get a lot more "unique", might be best to contract with a landscape designer for at least a consultation but a more unique, distinctive garden will involve more removal of the commonplace stuff and replacement with other, less common choices that could prove to be a more expensive option than you prefer....See MorePlease help with this boring living room!
Comments (11)You really have a nice start with what you have. Just and a rug, some framed art work, maybe some panels. Would definitely add more colorful pillows to the sectional and a floor lamp for additional lighting during the evening. The dining table is nice it just need to be appropriately decorated to flow with the other space. What type of chairs do you have for the dining table? If this is the only space for family time or tv watching, then you can maybe put it in the far left corner and at an angle so all can view what is being watched. If you want it to be like the surrounding sitting space, I suggest disguising it within an armoire. A nice piece of art work would look lovely above the fireplace. And some greenery would really help the space feel lived in. Good luck with creating your space and have fun while doing it....See MoreBoring kitchen help please - glass doors? Over cabinet lights?
Comments (20)Please leave well enough alone? Other than to remove the valance at the window which you don't need in an unlined plain. Either find a fabric you love, or add color in tea towels. a runner on the floor, a bowl of fresh fruit etc. People have been trying "to liven the space above cabinets" for several decades. It's the first reason to take cabinetry to the ceiling and then trim. Obliterate temptatation, if you will. Leave it empty up there, and dust it a couple times a year :)...See MorePlease help my flat boring split level
Comments (17)Hi EC, love your color schemes (both of them!). I'm not necessarily averse to brick, and as Ken says it will be more maintenance-free if you don't paint it, but I feel like there's TOO much of it here. It's a shame when they built the house they didn't make those windows bigger... Is that yellow clapboard that you will be painting? Or vinyl siding you will be replacing? If replacing the siding, I wonder if it's possible to bring the siding down lower over the brick, to soften the house a bit? As far as landscaping, it's usually best to wait some time to get an idea of your sun situation, as well as using this time to really look for ideas and then research if your ideas will work in your area. Maybe wait till your carport is done before you do any major planting to see how it will work into the design. BTW, congratulations!!!! :) Dee...See MoreDiane@426
