Replace a door with sidelight- leave sidelight and get new door?

I have an entry door with a single sidelight. I can’t seem to find a door/sidelight that I like so I was wondering if I can leave the sidelight and only replace the door? I’m guessing not without a possibility of disaster?

It all depends on the construction of the unit. Is it one unit or are the door and sidelight independent units? If independent, you can do it. If one, will be tricky.

Zipdee, spring bronze is a no-brainer to install. All you need is a hammer, tin snips if you need to cut it and a straight edge (yardstick, preferably). If you order it, make sure you mention that you want nails the same color as the spring bronze. They typically include them anyway, but just to be safe. The best way to install it is to cut a piece to length, mark every 1-1/2" with a marker pen, and then tack it in place using only the two end nails. Don't nail them in all the way at this point. Decide at which end you're going to start and nail that one in all the way. Then start adding nails one at a time moving down the line. Since you only tacked the last nail in place, you can pull it out and re-position it if you start getting extra length in the strip as you add nails. That's it!

I agree with marys1000: The sidelights should be the same color as the shutters (if you plan on having shutters). That will unify the design of the house and still allow the door to stand out. Our front door is Cottage Red, too--really nice color, I think. Our shutters are Essex Green (which is almost black). Lovely house, btw. :)

You mean on the porch? Hopefully I can get three pictures in here. All of our land is to the sides and back of the house, and there's pea gravel in front of one parking area. We have two parking areas. We're a bit from the road which is why I want the pots to stand out. Old picture, right side of porch. The furniture is still there but painted white, and rearranged, and a much larger colorful rug that will be replaced soon. So ignore thee colors. There's also a cream colored wrought iron stand with 4 shelves, not pictured. Oh, the porch roof is white. Left side of porch. Old picture when my Roses were in their glory. Every single one of them caught Rose Rosette Disease. If you look closely you can see the pea gravel where I park. This spring it will be like an English garden, full of Cosmos and such, the fencing will be replaced Not sure where the old pot and topiary are. I'm in the process of finding a new outdoor rug, I loved the one I have but it bleached and it doesn't get sun in that area! No clue what color it'll be.

Beth H. I feel like we'll want to have something for the evening when it's all lit up inside. They look out on our small-ish and private backyard, but I'd still feel unpleasantly exposed. We live in Seattle, too, where it gets dark really early for a good part of the year (until it's suddenly light until 11:00 p.m.). Plus just for safety (burglaries of convenience kind of thing). Funny - I saved the same picture of the white shades flanked by white curtains. I'm definitely considering something like that. I'm actually thinking now that I might like having the curtains cover some of the sidelights, as I can't stop feeling uncomfortable with so much glass. If they're not too heavy, we could probably squash them up to the sides pretty well, if we wanted. I have an antiquated fondness for beautiful draperies, anyway.

I agree, looks like 1 unit. What don't you like about the sidelights you're seeing with doors you like?

I just don’t like the designs in them, they look to elegant for the style of house. And I’d rather not buy blinds for a clear one.

You can put "rice paper" or other designs that will cover the plain glass. Lowe's and HD carry them.

Go to a local lumberyard. They can configure any combination of door and sidelight usually with dozens of standard glass options.

You need to pull that piece of trim between the sidelight & door to know if you have a one piece assembly or a ganged assembly. Ours was ganged to we were able to replace the sidelights and leave the door.

Why not a post a pic of your house and the door. BTW why blinds at all on a door unless the heat or UV rays are an issue? We have no clue as to your style but IMO you start taking apart something you better know how to put it back together .
